There's Nothing Better Than...

...a cozy little hotel bar when it's cold outside and you're far from home and missing your man. And a briskly efficient cocktail waitress with a Polish accent is always a tonic.

Where the fuck are you, Savage? And please don't tell me that you're old enough to remember After Dark magazine. That, kiddies, was what you would buy when you didn't have the balls to pick up a Blueboy.

Whatcha drinking Dan, looks like it's got an olive? Gin or vodka?

There was a junk store a block from my house that had boxes full of vintage After Dark magazines, and I used to pour over them, and I credit those old magazines with shaping my taste in men—tall, lean, shaggy-haired dancer/Times Square hustler types.

Vodka and soda, with lime... and a little dish of cornichon pickles that the lovely waitress set down in front of me without my even asking. I love cornichon and they're perfect, just perfect.

Sometimes I forget how cluttered some webpages are for those not using ad blocking.

Also, why don't you auto hide/show the dock?

It's a cheaters nightmare on 20/20 with Babba Wawa. Mark Sanford has to be squirming right about now.

Wish I was there, but not with you, but as far as I can get from my life and all its banal issues. And getting completely pissed with a bottle of Pappy, that I forget why my heart hurts. Stupid heart. That sounds like heaven right now.

Kim @7, LOL, I couldn't believe your post for a second. You updated your avatar and I thought this was from an impostor.

All my best. Take good care.

Aw, kim. You are always such a positive presence in these threads. I hope that whatever is wrong rights itself soon. You unhappy is like a puppy with a cast on its paw or something. Not right.

I'm always curious how much editing The Slog/Savage does of reader comments. This comment community is almost too perfectly Married With Children to be true. Do the writers moderate their own posts?

I don't know why, but posts like these just make me like you even more than before. Enjoy your trip, Dan, and safe travels back home to your family.

Humm... cold night + warm bar (usually) = decalf coffee w. Kalua, perferably with a sugared rim. Yummy. Or Bandy... brandy is good..

Keep warm Dan, and safe travels.

I am also sorry, Kim. Not the praying kind, but keeping you in my thoughts... which is what my mother would ask me to do when prayers were in order.

Dan, take 7 minutes of your valuable web surfing time, and learn a bit from this "public" speaker. It's time to stand up for Free Speech and to stand against Islamization. (3:30 leans to defending the gays, if attention deficit disorder prevents you the entire speech.) With a British accent, this man is concerned about your cozy way of life.

Crap, Kim. Life is tough all around. A virtual hug from me is here whenever you want one. In this case, virtual is better, as I'm still contagious in life.

But like viri, heartaches are temporary. It sucks, but it won't suck for too long.

Hey Dan,

On a totally unrelated topic, (your comment above made me think of it) I just wanted to let you know that every time you reference your mother it puts a smile on my face. Based purely on what I've read from you (so I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about or that I knew the lady or anything) she reminds me of my Granny who passed around the same time under not-dissimilar circumstances. Your article describing your family's experience with her passing was nothing short of heart-scorchingly (yes, I know it’s not a word, but heartbreaking was simply inadequate) brilliant. If more people understood, REALLY understood the choices families with terminally ill loved ones faced, I just can't believe we wouldn't have more humane options.

On behalf of myself and my family, I just wanted to say thank you so very much for fighting the good fight and getting the word out there.

And aren't we both so lucky to have been loved by such extraordinary women?

@7 - Aww Kim. I don't know you either, but I'd like to add my virtual hug to the pile. Whatever's going on it will get better. My Gran used to say "this too shall pass" (not sure why, she's clearly on my mind today). But I think Avenue Q put it pretty well too... Things suck, but only "For Now"

@28-
let's pretend i'm new, a week or so, maybe a month, or two. regarding heterosexual males, if i may, i am one. i gather charles, brendan, anthony, grant are as well. constant is iffy. as far as commenters. are there any out and proud (having pride in one's accomplishments makes sense to me, sort of. pride in your nature, 'god' given make-up, whatever, seems absurd) hetero men?

On-topic: Happy Saint Valentines!

Oh Kim @7, thinking of you. A dog is such a great companion in bad times. My pound dog sends greetings to your hound.

Lots of x's and o's.

(and you don't sound like a monster, just a frayed human. I once heard a lecture from a family practice doctor who worked on a Navajo reservation. He was going through a bad patch and the community became concerned and asked the shaman to visit him. The shaman told him he had lost his soul and performed a little ceremony to help him get it back. I don't recall the details--there was drumming and herb-burning involved. Anyway, he said it worked!, really well, and that ever since that time he lived differently because of that experience. Anyway, I hope your heart finds its way to serenity in due time.)

@Kim:
Saturday night at the Rose and Crown is just the place to be—
Tinkers and tailors and soldiers and sailors all out for a bit of a spree
If you find that you're weary of life with the trouble and strife, and the kids have got you down,
It will all come right on Saturday night at the Rose and Crown!

SLOG maintains a high troll-to-content ratio as a gauge of expressive liberty here. You have to really want it to write a post worthy of removal.
