Some Things Never Change

Posted by on Fri, Feb 5, 2010 at 12:31 PM

Cops will always love doughnuts. But, as this photo from Slog tipper Jon illustrates, some things change:

In my day, cops walked to the doughnut shop...

Didn't Flash Gordon ride one of those in the movie? No one will be seated during the "parking enforcement" scene.

Oh my god, this picture mocks itself.

At some point, cops stopped even giving a damn about appearing respectable. Instead of being respected they opted for being feared -- because as goofy and pathetic as they seem on those dumb things, they can still get away with beating your face in with a baton, or at least ticketing you for any construable offense. And they know you know it.

The only thing more dangerous than full grown 12 year olds with no self respect is full grown 12 year olds with no self respect who stopped giving a damn a long time ago.

What the fuck is that thing? It's hideous.

I've actually heard an SPD officer comment that there's an (unofficial?) policy not to go into doughnut shops while on duty. Starbucks appears to be the preferred new doughnut shop.

Is this the Wall-E precinct headquarters?

Newsflash...those are the vehicles of Parking Enforcement Officers, NOT Police Officers. I have been in Top Pot on 5th Ave when they arrive for their donut break. It's pretty funny.

@5, I see cops at Starbucks all the time. Instead of drip coffee and donuts they have lattes and scones.

Great photo. At least they're buying local.

I have seen some fat fuckers on these things. I can WALK faster than these machines move. I love to watch them move from corner to corner, rotate in a circle and then crawl across the street, on and on, repeat.

There's a rent-a-cop at Northgate who thinks he's hot shit on a stick riding one of those. He spins, turns, weaves. The effect is similar to that of that old YouTube video of the fat kid waving his light saber in his garage.

The only thing this photo is missing is some blue nitrile gloves.

I can't help it, the large "Interceptor" logo on the back of the meter-watcher golf cart cracked me up. The idea of a golf cart being able to intercept anything beyond maybe someone using a walker is hilarious.

Cops should wear white shirts to hide the powdered sugar.

"SPeD parking only. Violators will be looked at from inside the shop window."

Top Pot are no longer "local" when you could get genuine Top Pot doughnuts at Starbucks in Canada. Said Top Pot doughnuts were made in a bakery in Mississauga, Ontario. At least they used a local recipe.

@16: Those "Interceptors" will forever remind me of one indelible scene in Dead Like Me [from 2:02 in this clip].

Hey, if someone gets a chance, ya wanna call SPD and ask them why exactly they need a Segway and a motorized trike thing?

I doubt they have a legitimate reason. But I'd like to know what reason they give. Like what application would this have that a bike or walking would not have? Is it for parking enforcement? Chasing other segways? I'm just curious what they say.

for the record, those are all Parking Enforcement Officers (PEOs), not actual cops... still funniest fucking picture i've seen in a long time...

You know, however, if someone paid me to ride around on a SegWay and write on a little pad of paper, how could I say no???
