I became disgusted with the football right around the time I became a knee-jerk lefty college blowhard, which happened after spending my sophomore year of high school sitting on the bench for the football team, and then spending my junior and senior years smoking grass, drinking beer, and listening to rock music.
Miraculously, years later I graduated college, got a job, and a television, and became a fan of not doing anything on Sundays. Maybe more I became a fan pseudo-participating in something in which I have, at most, a passing interest, because it's quite relaxing to have only a passive interest in whatever you're doing for a time. Also, it gives me something to discuss with people who have nothing else to talk about.
Because placing wagers on things in which one only has a passing interest helps to amplify the interest, I bet the bar manager at my bar job (he's from New Orleans), an undisclosed sum that the Colts would win. And while I can always use an undisclosed sum, I really want shit-talking rights for the next year. Also, I like rooting for the underdog. (The Colts are the underdogs, right?) Lastly, a good game (i.e., a game that the Seahawks are not in), can be a fun distraction from life's greater concerns. Here's to hoping Superbowl XLIV is one of those, and to my inevitable Monday morning hangover.
As mentioned, Brendan Kiley, now Lindy West, Courtney Kelly, someone named "Chicago Fan," and I will be Live-Slogging the thing on Sunday, starting sometime around the time that it starts.
