O They Will Know We Are Christians...

Posted by on Fri, Feb 5, 2010 at 9:44 AM

...by shit like this:

FloridaApoption.jpg

In a deliberate attempt to ridicule a lesbian couple involved in an adoption case, the Florida Family Policy Council used the above-left photo in press materials about the case. The actual couple is on the right. My source tips me that the left photo is the first result one gets when doing a Google search for "ugly lesbians."

Do right-wing fundamentalist Christians really believe that only good-looking people with decent haircuts, low BMIs, and basic fashion sense should be allowed to parent? Because if that's the case someone needs to take Rick Warren's kids away.

You source is correct. Incidentally the website hosting that photo is Free Republic.

Not ugly, but they sure look determined.

How terrible, for shame, etc., but that is the funniest goddam thing I've seen in aaaages.

Looks like they spend a lot of time on Fark.

Hey! I knew lots of people with haircuts like that, both men and women... 20 years ago. I even briefly had a quazi-mullet myself around 1989-ish. Thank god nobody is using 20-year-old photos of me to represent today's gays.

They are a beautiful couple. Once again, Florida sucks. Let's all not live there.

Man, my heart goes out to that couple on the left, if they truly are the first image that comes up under "ugly lesbians." That's cruel.

As for the real couple, I'm rooting for them! Sounds like FFPC is getting desperate.

of course you should never ridicule or attempt to embarrass those you oppose morally or politically by engaging in a deceitful and juvenile stunt, say, like licking doorknobs...

and we sure want to repost the picture of the 'uglies' as much as possible to magnify their humiliation...

@10

Seriously. If one of those lesbians on the left was a dude, that photograph could be taken in any exurban fundamentalist church in the country.

Nine of out ten poorly dressed fat people with mullets and large square-frame glasses live in unincorporated areas, attend fundamentalist churches, and read Left Behind books.

I keep having to explain to my son that there *are* decent people who are Christians, but it's a position getting more and more difficult to support.

Even if the photo on the left were the real one, I think this "lesbians shouldn't be allowed to adopt because they're ugly" tactic is pretty funny. Really, if that's the best they can come up with then it's a sign they're reaching for anything they think might work because they haven't got a valid argument to make. Unless, of course, the FFPC really thinks adoption is really based on looks.

Personally I know some people have views that are so repugnant they shouldn't be allowed near children at all--and that would include members of the FFPC. But it has nothing to do with how they look.

Go to the About Us section of their website. One of the things they claim to fight for is the 10 commandments. One of the 10 commandments, I'm told, is some variation of "you shall not bear false witness against your neighbour." I don't think there could be a more clear-cut example of breaking that particular commandment.

My list of least desirable places to live (or visit) is determined by how many episodes of Cops I have seen set in that area. Tops on the list are Pierce County, Las Vegas, and of course, EVERY city in Florida.

"Do right-wing fundamentalist Christians really believe that only good-looking people with decent haircuts, low BMIs, and basic fashion sense should be allowed to parent?"

if the fundamentalists believe that, then finally we have found some common ground between them and you, Danny.

Beat me to it, Dingo @17. False witness galore, not just here but in all of these stories today about the widespread fundamentalist Christian assault on our gay friends and neighbors, and by extension all of us. Since the gay is not a physically-identifiable characteristic, this kind of anti-gay hate puts all of us at risk, gay or straight.

That's disgusting and cruel. I feel worse for the couple on the left than the one on the right. I hope their relationship is more stable and happy than any of those of the fundies seeking to humiliate them. Seriously, grow up.

re #21: nice try. Except of course, neither of those people is Martin Gill either. A couple of minutes of Googling reveals that Mr. Gill is tall, bald, slim, and has a goatee. What a tangled web, etc, etc.

I posted a civil but terse rebuke on their blog. Let's see if they have the guts to post it after it awaits moderation. If they don't, that's just as telling as their little fuck-up.

Jesus - the actual couple on the right are the prettiest lesbians I ever did see!

To be honest, if more lesbians looked like this couple (and not the uglies on the left), people would probably be more accepting of gay marriage & adoption. Pretty can get you anything. Ugly? Not so much.

I posted exactly what I posted in 23. When I did so there was one comment thanking them for the post, and mine was awaiting moderation. Now the one comment seems to be gone and commenting is closed. Ha. They can't stand up to even the slightest scrutiny.

Does anyone know the source of that couple on the left? I've seen the pic before on a few gag sites, "10 Horrible Glamour Pics," that sort of thing. It was next to a pic of Liam Sullivan's Kelly, so I wondered if the weird couple was also a gag or not.

Sickening.

Not the Florida Families, but all y'all.

Here is a perfect example of the hypocrisy of this bullshit about someone's looks/BMI/whatever perfectly juxtaposed with issues where people are denied rights because of who they are, and you're so busy being assholes about it that you can't even see what you're doing. It's like O'Reilly asking Karl Rove if right wing crazies actually do exist. Unbelievable.

I'm at a loss to say which of these is more sad:

1. The fact that we live in a society where conventional good looks have such a strong effect on whether or not we think a person is worthy of being treated with basic fucking dignity (especially women).

2. The fact that a Christian group, claiming to be all morally superior and Jesus-y, would EXPLOIT this societal sickness, or...

3. The fact that any people who call out said Christian group out on this disgusting behavior are, themselves, in danger of being accused of looks-based shallowness simply because we can see what's going on.

We are inherently looks-based shallow, just as we are intrinsically xenophobic, and we have to resist these tendencies in order to give unattractive people (or different people) a fair shake.

This is why those who can see beyond what is skin deep are considered to have depth or character, themselves.

But that an institution would seek to misrepresent their rivals as ugly does indicate they're playing to the baser natures of their readers, in turn implying a dearth of brights in their base.

It is as is typical of contemporary conservatism; by idiots, for idiots.
