Sometimes my mother emails me news stories that she feels put her parenting skills in perspective—skills like handing my phone number/high school graduation photo out at bars to men who laugh at her jokes, or telling people that as a child I had a cleft palate so severe that she had to dip rags into milk and squeeze them into my mouth for sustenance. (In reality, I had an overbite.)

Anyway. This reminds me of those news stories:

Turkish police have recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl they say was buried alive by relatives in an "honour" killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys.

The girl, who has been identified only by the initials MM, was found in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre hole dug under a chicken pen outside her home in Kahta, in the south-eastern province of Adiyaman.

Props to you, mom, for never burying me alive in a hole.

Not that it isn't awful, but did it need to be blogged twice in one day? (Earlier post here.)

I would love to hear more stories about your mother, however, you do need to read Slog more often.

I think we're going to need to see that high school graduation photo as well, missy.

I'm happy enough to see Cienna posting to Slog again that she's welcome to double post anything she likes, as far as I'm concerned.

There is an omitted "me" in the last sentence, though. My vision of Cienna as writerly goodness personified is now completely shattered.

I think your mother and mine went to the same school of parenting. Killing with kindness never hurt quite so badly.

This happens especially in ethnic Kurdish areas of Turkey (and Iraq).

Go to the Kurdish Women's Rights Watch and cry your eyes out.

[ps Charles beat you to this story, but really there are multiple reports every month of this happening out of "liberated" Kurdish Iraq, so why wait for it to be coming out of Turkey to care? Was it the buried alive? I'm not totally sure that is worse than being publically beaten to death by your father, brothers, and uncles...and I really don't want to imagine it]

Cienna Madrid 10
Apologies for forcing you to read the same news twice. Next time, I will do my best to beat Charles to horrific stories of women being buried in holes. It has been added to my RSS feed.

Are we going to get some "official" announcement of your triumphant return to the Stranger, Cienna Madrid? Are you back as a staff journalist, or are you just visiting Slog for a while?
