Sometimes my mother emails me news stories that she feels put her parenting skills in perspective—skills like handing my phone number/high school graduation photo out at bars to men who laugh at her jokes, or telling people that as a child I had a cleft palate so severe that she had to dip rags into milk and squeeze them into my mouth for sustenance. (In reality, I had an overbite.)
Anyway. This reminds me of those news stories:
Turkish police have recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl they say was buried alive by relatives in an "honour" killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys. The girl, who has been identified only by the initials MM, was found in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre hole dug under a chicken pen outside her home in Kahta, in the south-eastern province of Adiyaman.
Props to you, mom, for never burying me alive in a hole.
