Too Early?

Posted by on Thu, Feb 4, 2010 at 5:46 AM

A "Savage Love" reader sent this link to a twenty-year-old story in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology: a woman born without a vagina gets pregnant after giving a blowjob. There's a swallowed load, a boyfriend, an ex-boyfriend, and a knife fight. I wonder if the film rights are still available?

I also love that they call the knife fight a "small war," and that, "the patient was well aware of the fact that she had no vagina..."

It's a quick read, and well worth it.

It's never too early for a story as good as this.

I am sooo glad to see this BJOG piece again! This was required reading in my OB/GYN residency.

I referenced it it a comments thread last summer, and you would have thought I murdered puppies or something like. I was accused of trivializing sexual assault, and of condoning attacks on pregnant women (which I couldn't figure, since the attack occurred before she got pregnant). I think it's hilarious, particularly the matter-of-fact reporting that there was an exchange of cattle to settle everyone's various claims and complaints in the case.

Hell no, Dan! I rolled into work around 9.30 CST. I can't be up and functioning at 7.30- still too early. =)

Hope you are enjoying the... um... lovely weather?

FYI- Art Institute is free every day (including weekends!) in February if you are so inclined.

What a great read. The last line is hilarious. Glad this writer had a sense of humor.

And let it be a lesson to girls everywhere, to prevent sperm from escaping an injured GI tract and successfully finding an egg, generate some stomach acid by eating first before fellatio.

The young mother, her family,
and the likely father adapted themselves rapidly
to the new situation and some cattle changed
hands to prove that there were no hard feelings.

Not so good of a case to illustrate for those who condone oral sex as a more 'viable' and 'safe' option for teens. Nature will always find a way to manifest her way even if we as humans do things to avoid it.

LC, your post at 19 is even more incoherent than usual. Who promotes oral sex for teens as being safe? Please tell me. Maybe teen boys might like to spread that idea, but, really who else?

And "Nature will always find a way to manifest her way?" wtf?

@19: Yes, "nature" has a pesky habit of manifesting "her" way via knife fights. That makes so much sense.

My god you're dumb.

@19, she obviously didn't ACTUALLY become pregnant from oral sex, they had attempted sex before and sperm must have entered the deformed (not completely absent) vagina.

@23, huh? Did you read it? She became pregnant from the stab wound. You don't get pregnant from sperm being in your vagina. If you're suggesting there was some way the sperm got into her stub of a vagina, which had no outlet, you're simply wrong.

@19, you are the most deliberately garbageheaded person who ever lived. Nature didn't find a way; the girl got fucking stabbed.

Slog reading comprehension fail.

LC you a fucking dumbass. I have never ever seen that book in a public school. And I went to high school in mother fucking southern Indiana. What I do know is that we had abstinence only education, and my sophomore year they caught a 19 year old basic skills student (read shop class) having sex with a 13 year old basic skills student in the HALLWAY. My poor physics teacher. It seems the greatest proponent of teen pregnancy is ignorance. Yay you.

You didn't make this up, LC. BUT....

The information you use is purposely misleading. See if you can spot the differences between the site you use to state your case, and what an actual journalist writes when reporting the story.

It's kind of like "Highlights" for adults. Let's all play "Fact vs. Fic!" (or fuc, whatever)

@LC - I understand that *you* believe that this sort of literature would be inappropriate in a school setting, and I respect your right to think that. That being said, I do want to say that I knew a LOT of people in high school (and it's too bad that this really only focuses on gay men) who would have been spared a huge amount of pain and self-hate if they'd had access to this kind of positive message.

The "family values" that you seem to ascribe to (and I'm just going off of your posts here, so forgive me if I've got it wrong) are all well and good.... if you fit in that mould. For those of us who don't those sort of socially imposed "rules" can be torture and lead to self-hatred, abuse and death.

I'd much rather expose young adults to a potentially awkward conversation than the funeral of a classmate.
