The Politics of Palinesque

Posted by on Thu, Feb 4, 2010 at 11:45 AM

Jaime Herrera
  • Jaime Herrera: Palinesque?
In my story this week about the possibility that Democrats might lose Washington's 3rd Congressional District—and what they can do about it—I take a side-trip through the conservative contenders:

Among the Republicans who want the seat: Jon Russell, who touts his experience on the Washougal City Council and has cut a YouTube video comparing himself to a cure for intestinal disorders; former Bush administration bureaucrat David Castillo, who opposes gay marriage and wants to "protect innocent life from conception to death"; and Representative Jaime Herrera (R-Camas), who cut her political teeth as a legislative aide to Republican congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Spokane and is casting herself as "a woman who believes deeply that America is on the wrong track."

Dwight Pelz, chair of the state Democratic Party, has taken particular note of the threat from Herrera, comparing her to Sarah Palin and calling her a "right-wing Republican" who is "long on style, short of substance."

When Pelz originally made the Palin comparison, Republican leaders called his remarks "disgraceful" and "sexist" and "belittling of women."

To which the always quotable Dwight Pelz responded:

I compared her to Sarah Palin, and the Republican Party apparently thinks that’s an insult, so they must not think much of Sarah Palin.

Its the "long on style, short of substance" part that they are referring to as sexist. That is a pretty tactless comment, despite me liking none of them.

Please explain to me why in the fuck we should vote for or care about voting for another Democrat if they're just going to act like Republicans when they get into office? Why would any rational person vote for a Democrat knowing they're going to vote to freeze domestic spending and increase military spending? "Democrat" is not a synonym for "good guys" anymore, Eli. But then again hardcore party liners like yourself don't care what your party does as long as they're not Republicans. Hitler could have won WWII if only he'd started calling himself a Democrat. For Dems, what you do is irrelevant. You can be as right wing as Reagan as long as you keep the name "Democrat."
