The Morning News: Giannoulias, Prius, and Jobless

Posted by on Thu, Feb 4, 2010 at 9:00 AM

And now, brakes problems for the Prius: Leading to the possibility of another Toyota recall.

Hey, Microsoft: Why don't you bring us the future anymore?

Hey, NSA: Google needs your help finding a hacker.

Giannoulias: Good enough to hold Obama's old senate seat?

Pay for play: The Republicans shake down Wall Street.

Race to the back of the line: Washington State slow to submit its Race to the Top grant application.

Jobless claims: Rising, unexpectedly.

Clarence Thomas: "Why I don't go" to the State of the Union.

Robbery motive: Possibly, in last month's double homicide in Northgate.

Elton John and Billy Joel at Key Arena: Guess who wore the embroidered tuxedo jacket?

And Stephen Colbert on John McCain on DADT:

All this time I thought the reason Thomas didn't attend the State of the Union address was as a public service.

re:Race to the Top application

Perhaps the entire State of Washington could declare itself a School for the Mentally Retarded.

Having seen your Senators, it would be an easy sell...

Jobless rate continues to SKYROCKET.

Luckily Obama is paying lip service to DADT so the credulous Left will never notice...

I'm not sure why, but it always makes me a little uneasy to have all three branches of government in the same room at the same time.

As much as I disagree with his legal judgements, I don't blame Thomas. Of course, the catcalls were all from the Repubs, so was Justice Thomas embarrassed? If he actually is embarrassed by this, well, maybe he actually has a heart in addition to pubic hair. ;-)

So why are you not covering the facts (refute them if you can) about Chris Bushnell, McGinn's right hand, who is apparently a convicted felon (and not on a small "oops" scale) and has continually misrepresented himself as a PhD? Are you no longer interested in city politics or are your loyalties leading you to bury this? I want McGinn to succeed, but his dedication to filling his office with his political cronies--to an extent that no recent mayor has--make me an a lot of other supporters back off and fear for our city. Where is the Stranger in this?

Microsoft a profitable, but sluggish dying dinosaur. That's news?

@8, @10 ...it's fascinating to watch isn't it? One of the biggest potential scandals in an otherwise sleepy city and The Stranger is no where to be seen. Let's start our speculations without recourse to suggestions of pettiness nor ignorance. I suggest that The Stranger has established a concrete "let's give McGinn a honeymoon" for reasons associated with past collegiality with him and/or some members of his staff. The question is, for how long can they hold off? I'll take bets on no more than a few more weeks at this rate of apparent scandal.

Here's the new Hubble maps of Pluto news I prematurely tried to link to earlier in the week:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble…

"NASA today released the most detailed set of images ever taken of the distant dwarf planet Pluto. The images taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show an icy and dark molasses-colored, mottled world that is undergoing seasonal changes in its surface color and brightness. Pluto has become significantly redder, while its illuminated northern hemisphere is getting brighter...

"This has taken four years and 20 computers operating continuously and simultaneously to accomplish"

@11: Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Look at how long they ignored the whole ECB-bottle-of-wine thing.

Oh, fer chrissake. So he's a convicted felon? So fucking what? He served his time. If you have any evidence of current or recent criminal activity, bring it on. Former prisoners have the right to reintegrate into society, and society has an obligation to accept them. Unless you think the death penalty should apply to all crimes, you have to accept that people will need to have jobs after they serve their time.

The PhD thing is pretty rank, but I don't see where it has anything to do with his job.

This is just stupid. Go after McGinn for his policies if you want, but this crap is just lame.

Considering a judge just found Washington State in violation of the constitution by underfunding schools ... maybe the Race for the Top application might not go over so well ...

2006 - Clarence Thomas at Bush's SOTU. Photo shows he looks all too happy to be there. Hypocrit.

Future? Microsoft??!!?? Are you thinking of the near 10 years that it took them to create a semi-functioning copy of the original Mac OS? Or perhaps you are missing Microsoft "Bob"? Or Smart Watches using Microsoft's SPOT technology? Or Windows Me? Or Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, the hacker's dream?

Or perhaps the original Microsoft Tablet PC: "The Tablet is a PC that is virtually without limits - and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America." 2001 Comdex keynote from Bill Gates, Futurist
