Someday We Won't Have to Hear Anymore About John and Elizabeth Edwards

Posted by on Thu, Feb 4, 2010 at 5:49 AM

But that day hasn't come yet.

Disgraced former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards struck his cancer-stricken wife during a shocking marriage-ending brawl, according to the National Enquirer, the same publication that revealed the existence of the politician's lovechild with his mistress, Rielle Hunter. "John lost his temper big time," an unnamed "close friend" of Elizabeth Edwards reportedly told the gossip publication. "When [John] made the decision to hit me, it was over," the friend said Edwards told her of the 32-year marriage.

But another friend of the family reportedly told that publication that Elizabeth Edwards sometimes also attacked her husband physically when the two were discussing his affair with Hunter.

"Elizabeth has slapped John in the past during fights over his extramarital affair with Rielle," the source said. "She was so tormented by John's cheating and lies that she lashed out physically at him many times, even slapping him."

Just goes to show there's always a dark side behind any sticky sweet couple you're convinced is the paragon of happiness and perfection. This thing is like watching a train wreck.

"...according to the National Enquirer..."

This sentence encourages me to believe that we really don't have to hear about this anymore. One big story does not a paragon of investigative journalism make.

Not to mention they pay for their sources.

Why the fuck is CBS quoting shit from the National Enquirer?

Hey, don't diss the Enquirer 2 and 3. I know they're a rag and all, but they have broken some big stories in the last few years, including the Rush Limbaugh addiction story and the John-Edwards-is-a-skunk-and-put-his-honey-on-the-campaign-payroll story (which IS a legit political piece: he broke the law). Knowing about those two stories changed history, and the other papers were sitting on them---didn't want to piss off the powerful, I guess.

Since they're have no reputation to speak of they'll report stuff that's true that the NYTimes won't touch with a ten-foot pole. It's a real service to you and me.

@2 Compared to most of our 'legitimate' paragons of investigative journalism, the National Enquirer probably gets more correct than we suspect.

Now if the Enquirer would just post some pictures of his great big weenie, the whole sordid story could be laid to rest and we really would never hear from them again...
At least until he started doing actual porn.

@6&4 I don't dispute your points. It's just that their practices force me to view them with more suspicion than I do most other papers. But what the hell do I know? Maybe this is the future of journalism.

So when he hits her, it's a marriage-ending dealbreaker. When she hits him, it's his fault for cheating on her in the first place. Oh, double standards...

Holy fucking shit - this guy had a legitimate shot at being president. Maybe in 2012, Edwards and Palin can get on a ticket together and we, as the US, can play the greatest international practical joke ever by voting them in.

From what I've read, Elizabeth E is no saint, and did not treat her husband very well at all. If it's true, it's no surprise her husband sought some relief elsewhere

Yes, once in every great while, The Enquirer gets it right. But far more often they get it completely wrong. I don't trust anything they "report".

Dan,

Which do you find most compelling and outrageous:

that a washed up former Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate cheated on his unsaintly wife
or
that homosexuals give each other AIDS at 37X the rate of normal Americans.

Which behavior choice is most damaging and inexcusable?

help us out here....

The Edwardses take the lead by a nose!! Mark and Jenny Sanford are painfully just behind them in the Traditional Marriage Derby.

How will Jenny Sanford top Elizabeth with cancer being beaten AND cheated on?? Word on the street tells us that Mark Sanford may have been wearing Jenny's pumps while performing anal sex on his Argentinian tart, although it is not confirmed.

Tiger Woods - still lengths ahead in the adulterous marathon - is being slowed by a threatened reunion with his cuckolded wife Elin. He better get back on his knees and start licking at the vulva if he wants to stay in this race...

Show us how its done heteros!! Flout your privilege!! Traditional marriage for the gays - free-for-all fucking with no legal strings for the straights!!!

I don't think we HAVE to pay attention to this stuff at all. Reject stupid sensationalist crap from media, ignore the channels and networks as they marginalize and wither, and lead a happier life. Lies are told in annual reports, mass-market general publications and especially on television. I don't understand how people build up such a tolerance to this. When the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal broke, people outside the U.S. got sick of hearing/reading about it in a week, but it went on in the US news for what seemed to be near eternity.

I'd like to know what stress management techniques the Slog posters use to decompress from reporting clutterfluff items that repulse them.

Slapping his wife? Looks like a typical case of the 'people over the (so-called) powerful'.

If you don't want to hear any more about it, then why the fuck are you shouting it from the rooftops?!

I know - poor, poor beleaguered media, forced to exploit sad stories like this, your hands are tied, blah blah blah.

she slapped him repeatedly?

why isn't the headline "Enraged Elizabeth Edwards guilty of multiple assaults, husband John Edwards endured them stoically."

"Friends say her bitchiness drove him to seek love elsewhere."
"Once she started hitting him instead of talking through problems for him the physical part of the marriage was over, although he bravely kept up their intellectual and political intimacy," a friend of John Edwards reportedly said.

Oh wait, that'd be if we lived in a gender-equalized world....in the world we do live in one DROP of a man making unwanted physical contact of any nature outweighs repeated assaults by a woman. And gets the lede.

Sorry, but it's only a double standard if he slapped her. There's a difference between a hit and a slap. Yes, both are physical, but there's a major difference in degrees there. And yes, I'd say that if it went the other way as well.

Fuck that. "even slapping him." EVEN slapping the fucker who cheated on your ass? Well golly GOSH.

Look, she might be (sure seems to be) a stupid bitch for a lot of other reasons, but I hardly think we can cry foul on someone slapping their spouse for fucking someone else.

Although it does sound like she did it on several different occasions, which is a bit much.
