Yesterday The Stranger DIDN'T Suggest: Chillaxing

Posted by on Tue, Feb 2, 2010 at 1:52 PM

Kyle Regan—a masochistic Stranger reader—had vowed to do every single thing recommended by the Stranger Suggests (movies, galleries, bars, concerts) for the month of January. Yesterday was his first day off in a long time. We hope he enjoyed it. —Eds.

Dan suggested that I write about what I did on my first night as a free man. It was weird. The kid I watch was sick, so I had pretty much the entire day to myself. A day full of opportunity, hours to spend exploring, and what do I do?

Chilled like a motherfucker.

Oh man. Episodes of Wiretap, Radiolab, and This American Life streamed as I did absolutely nothing. My sloth-like state couldn't last forever. Eventually I caught up on laundry, cleaning, and a bit of homework. I did end up going back Chili's on the Ave for dinner. The Masala Dosa was as good as I remembered and I talked to the friendly owners again. Apparently they read my review and were really happy about it. I blushed.

I'm attaching a map of everywhere I went during January. Not pictured are the Transcendent Church of Bass in Queen Anne and the time when Eugene and I accidentally drove to White Center. 13 Coins is a red square because you should never, ever eat there.

I don't know if my days will be quite as busy as they were. Now that I'm going to have to pay for shows and things I want to go to, there will be a cap. I'm going back to Laff Hole at Chop Suey on Wednesday, and beyond that, who knows? Most of my time was spent in Capitol Hill, milling around with hipsters and the gays. Turns out I really like Capitol Hill. The Ave just doesn't have that luster now that I've been to bigger and better places. As soon as funds allow, that will probably be my locale of choice. I'd also like to go to more dance-heavy concerts a la Church of Bass and the KEXP Expansions party, if only to punish my flat feet. All the art galleries I went to are free, so I'll try to keep going to those too.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who's been nice, everyone who kept it real, and everyone who pointed out my many grammatical missteps.

The internet isn't just for porn, it's also for friends.

Yeah, it must be nice, but I content that the internet is mainly for porn and whatever you wanna read after.

Did the Ave really have any luster ever? The day after they redid the roads and sidewalks some years back, they were covered again with gum, vomit and homeless people.

I say put him on the payroll. Doing exactly what he did in January. It was good, he was refreshing.

Capitol Hill is a bigger and better place now? You will live to regret those words, Kyle.
