Happy Groundhog Day

Posted by on Tue, Feb 2, 2010 at 4:01 PM

Groundhog!
In celebration, here are two weird factoids:

First, not content with our NATIONAL tradition (how UN-American!), last year Sarah Palin made February 2 "Marmot Day" in Alaska. La-di-da. (Thanks for the link, Mom!)

Second, according to a friend, "In an effort to make Punxutawny Phil more agreeable, he is fed bourbon-soaked biscuits in the wee hours of the morning before his big event." (To which my sister replied: "I wish someone fed me bourbon-soaked biscuits in the morning—I would be far more agreeable too.")

Enjoy.

So the second bit is an unverified rumor? Just so we're clear.

@1, yes. I did a bit of Googling and didn't find any confirmation.

Oh, fuck the biscuits. I'll just have the bourbon, thanks.

This Alaskan is FURIOUS that these nutjobs think you can just change a national holiday in your state. Is Kansas going to replace Hallowe'en with "hide under your bed day"? Will Virginia change Valentine's day into "Lover's Day"? These are some lame examples but no lamer than this crap.

For me, it was See A Squirrel Get Hit By A Car Day. :(

Well, I hope you scraped that squirrel off the sidewalk and ate him for dinner. There are children starving in Africa, you know.

"Scraped him off the road," that is. Excuse me, but I'm a bit pickled myself right now.

Speaking of which, ol' Phil ought to be mighty tenderized with all that booze in him. I wonder what he'd taste like.

Did someone say bourbon? I am so in. Let's go people.

Fifty-Two-Eighty,

I have no idea, but venison chops with a single malt glaze, served with a generous dram of Lagavulin is gastronomical ecstasy in my opinion. Sheer bliss. Now I am hungry ...

If you like venison, Kim, you would love elk. Try it some time (if you can find it).

Fifty-Two-Eighty,

We have lovely elk here in the Coast Range. We have a family friend who is a bow hunter and he is generous with his successes. Good stuff and I'll need to try it with that single malt glaze, though.

It's easy to be "generous with your successes" with elk. They are ginormous animals. I give away most of my successes also, and still have more than I know what to do with.

I didn't have much luck this year, so I guess I'll be doing without. And I even bought a new skinning knife for the occasion. Aw, shucks.

Better luck next year. I am sure the new skinning knife will have its day. A banner day.
