They did this in Spokane several years back. Public outrage made them change it back after I think a year.

@3 you are right. let me give you some gory details

Currently the Washington State Library (WSL) distributes federal funds called Library Services and Technology (LSTA) to libraries all around Washington. In order to do this WSL has to meet federal maintenance of effort (MOE) standards.

the current proposal before the Legislature is about $987,000 short of what the feds consider MOE. So if WSL is funded at the current proposed level libraries around the state will lose out on about $3.5 million in LSTA funds. Less hours, less storytime, fewer computer classes, etc, etc. all over the state.

Call or write (I hear handwritten letters that arrive in the mail are quite effective these days since there are so few of them) your legislators and ask them to fund WSL at federal MOE levels for the benefit of all libraries and library users around the state.

find your legislators here:

@5 the state of Arizona, and the city of Phoenix beg to differ.

If I had the choice between a bare bones functional library that was open long hours each day, or an expensive crown jewel by a marquis architect that was open for far less hours, I'd choose the former without hesitation. However, if you think that the effect of Seattle choosing the former would mean the current reduction in hours would have been avoided, well then I have a nice viaduct you might be interested in buying.

Oh, come on, we could claim it was an accident and collect the insurance money ...

People don't live or die by the existence of the downtown library.

Branch libraries, however, are what they identify with.

It's like overpaying CEOs for bad performance. Sometimes you have to cut the golden parachute cords and ask what your actual mission is.

I'm betting most people care a lot more about branch libraries than they do the expensive glass tomb downtown (caveat - while they renovated the Fremont branch, that was my library).

Y'all might want to remember this the next time the Seattle City Council comes to us with hat-in-hand asking for new voter-approved property taxes to pay for public services (like keeping libraries open, or Building the Gap II) that general fund dollars and councilmanic bonds could and should have covered if they hadn't been squandered underwriting the Mercer Street boondoggle and other downtown vanity projects/real estate subsidies.

By the the time this is all over, libraries will be booming.

I think all upper management at SPL should be fired and replaced with people who are actually qualified to be in those positions.

Good point @ 16. You should tell the City Council how you feel about it.

The Seattle Public Library is undergoing a strategic planning process to explore the future of the Library and how to prioritize existing resources. To kick off the process, the Library will be holding5 open-house style events for Seattle residents and patrons to “think big” and provide input about the future of the Library.

Do the Library’s resources meet your needs? Are the hours convenient for you? What does the Library do best? What things need improvement? Come give us your ideas and help shape the future of the Library!

You can stop by at any time during these 2 hour meeting times:

Noon to 2 p.m. Monday, March 1, Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 4, Room 1 (206-386-4636)
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, Northgate Branch, 10548 Fifth Ave. N.E. (206-386-1980)
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, High Point Branch, 3411 S.W. Raymond St. (206-684-7454)
2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 6, Ballard Branch, 5614 22nd Ave. N.W. (206-684-4089)
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, Beacon Hill Branch, 2821 Beacon Ave. S. (206-684-4711).
For more information, see the SPL website, email strategicplan@spl.org, or contact Eve Sternberg, project lead, at 206-386-1119. Special thanks to the Seattle Public Library Foundation for a grant to help fund the strategic planning process.
