The Worst Chick Tract Ever

Posted by on Mon, Feb 1, 2010 at 4:20 PM

Screen_shot_2010-02-01_at_2.57.08_PM.png
I used to think I had read every Chick tract ever produced. (If you don't know what Chick tracts are, you should read David Schmader's great, funny review of Doom Town, which can be found here.) But Scans Daily recently published Lisa, which is kind of the Lost Chick Tract. It is very disturbing.

I can't even begin to explain how awful Lisa is. It is all about Jack Chick's opinions on child molestation, and if you think you've read every awful thing that Jack Chick has ever written, you really haven't. I'm only putting this on Slog for those who think they've experienced the Full Chick. You should be warned: You will feel gross after reading Lisa. it's the most twisted thing that Chick, one of the most twisted authors I've ever read, has ever produced. Lisa has accomplished the impossible: It's made me hate Jack Chick even more.

I believe that almighty Alice Donut wrote a song inspired by this tract. I've never seen it and now my life is complete.

Jack Chick is a study in fucked up, outwardly projected self-loathing. A revolting, hate-crime-inciting study. He's exactly what you'd expect to get if you blended Stan Lee and Fred Phelps.

Bluh. I could have done without seeing this. It's bad enough when I find these little hate-pills at the bus stop.

@2 I pick up ever Chick tract I ever find in public so that no one else is accidentally influenced by them.

For those too lazy to read, you can hear a spoken version of this at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSZ15UzG6…

Free VCR rental with purchase of any adult film? Was that common practice in the early days of (adult) video stores?

I grew up hearing the argument that "once Satan is in your life, he's in control". It's the best excuse for shitty behavior Christians love to rely on. It's not ME who was raping my daughter/sleeping with gay hookers/molesting those kids--it was Satan! I couldn't help myself, I looked at some porn and went down a slippery slope once the devil took over! But once I pray the gay/rape/gay rape away, I just KNOW that God has forgiven me!

But you and your non-married partner better not have the same civil rights as I do, you disgusting pervos.

On another note, watching porn with strangers: It's the neighborly thing to do.

Rather than being disgusted or outraged by Chick comics over the years, I've always found them quite hilarious. The world of Chick comics is so hopelessly oversimplified as to be silly; there's tons of unintentional humor there amidst all the hellfire and damnation. In a word, it's...... campy!

It's "Christian camp", have some fun with it! In that way, you can eliminate whatever power they might have to ruin your day if you see one. Laugh at them, and your laugh will be as a dragon's fire, burning them to ash.

I have a sampler box of Chick tracts that I intend to make a coffee table book with, but have never seen this one. I think we should send hate mail to the church listed on the back. Churches just throw these things out for kids to take home with them without actually looking at the content. I used to read them as a kid because church was boring and they were comic books and some of them scared the shit out of me.

I dunno, it's not so bad. It seems up to par with Chick to me.

Jack seems worse than Catholics though (which he hate). It's the pedo himself who decided he was forgiven instead of a priest.

This isn't an actual Chick. It's probably written and published under his name and drawn in his style (except not, this is very sloppy and cramped) but I don't believe it's a legit Chick for a second.

According to the Jack T. Chick Museum Of Fine Art (http://www.chickcomics.com/), it is real. The art's by Fred Carter, the other primary artist of Chick Tracts. Kurt Kuersteiner knows his stuff. I did an interview with him here:

He's not only the owner of the JTC Museum, but he's done a book and a documentary on Chick. Really interesting stuff.

I usually admire Carter's work. This one is really sloppy, as if his heart wasn't in the material, or he was purposefully crafting it to be creepy, and then hit you with the innocence of the final panel.

Yes, Jack T. Chick is a special kind of American monster, but a (trust me, quick and very enjoyable) read of Dan Raeburn's "The Imp" #2 will leave you feeling that at least he actually believes his own insanity. Unlike the many other sociopaths who profit from religious power.

My recently deceased relative used to leave chick tracts in place of tips at restaurants. Jesus was better than money.

That's definitely a relative who should never have eaten at the same place twice.

I don't even want to know what was in his food if he did.

I hate this. On so many levels, I hate this. It's on par with "Diary Of An Unborn Child" by Lil Markie.

(If you choose to Google that and listen to it, I am not responsible for whatever gastronomic ailments befall you.)

@14 Maybe you're right. Lots of people who do really atrocious things in the name of their "good" are obviously not very concerned with goodness at all, but their own power. Thanks for correcting me,

I actually just wanted to recommend Raeburn's "Imp #2" as a great analysis of Chick's personality -- he actually got in there and met and interviewed both he and long time illustrator Carter -- and that the zine author expected someone more obviously disingenuous. Chick didn't come off as creepy or slimy, which you would fully expect from the way he sees things, but his stubborn grounding in challenging the opposition was astonishing.

It's like someone being crushed in a near death experience, and embracing all the smug values that led up to his comeuppance, instead of learning how to actually value what's genuinely important about life.

@8 -- I would agree. How can this be the worst when they are all so predictably shallow and stupid.

Looks like an average Chick tract.

Oh jeez, I'm third with the Alice Donut video link. Which makes me love Slog.

I like the fact every Chick tract comes with a little thing on the back you can sign and get out of going to hell. Just like that. Amazing. From in the soup to heaven bound, taadaa!

I suddenly found myself wishing that there was a Chick tract app on the iphone. Sadly...it does not exist.
