The Morning News: Obama's Budget, Beyonce's Haul, and Other Uses for a Baby Stroller

Posted by on Mon, Feb 1, 2010 at 8:38 AM

$3.8 trillion: Obama's budget is "spreadsheet boggling," but will reduce the deficit over time.

So long, January: You were so warm!

Fifty years ago today: The Woolworth lunch counter sit-in.

Iran opposition sets a date: Feb. 11, the anniversary of the 1979 revolution, will bring renewed protests.

No Child Left Behind: Getting an overhaul.

Is that a six-pack in your baby stroller? Why yes.

The Roubini economic outlook: "Very dismal."

No more drama: Not exactly, as Mary J Blige publicly humiliates her band.

Why does time move faster as you age? Your brain energy, say scientists.

All Beyonce's Grammy awards: Six of them, including song of the year:

"but will reduce the deficit over time. ..."

Way to drink the koolaid, Eli.
Take another big swig...

Obama's new budget deficit is $1.6 TRILLION.

On top of this year's $1.4 TRILLION.

Way more then the CBO's estimate of $1.35 TRILLION just last week.

And this one year's deficit is bigger than Bush's total deficit for 8 YEARS!

And the deficit will still be $1 TRILLION a year 10 years from now?

But, hey, Obama will reduce the deficit over time.

After we've accumulated another $12 TRILLION in debt.

"Freedom isn't free" and it's getting more expensive every minute. I never did buy that load of shit, but it's nice to throw it around now when the cost is REALLY getting up there and see who complains. I'll call them Un-American.

@2, even if you don't agree with the stimulus, actual deficit reduction simply is not possible right now, because the shitty Bush economy has depressed revenues so much. Real Republicans as well as Democrats are aware of this; it's only mouthbreathing jackasses who don't have any idea how government works who don't get it.

Blame state governments for the brunt of the problem. The Feds are having to engage in so much state funding because over the years taxes at the state level have become more and more regressive (sales, excise and use taxes). Since local governments can't run defecits over the long run, tying revenue to economic activity makes state spending very volatile. So not only does the federal government need to offset fiscal contraction, but it also needs to offset contraction in state government spending.

What an awful song.

@6, state governments are hugely encumbered by unfunded mandates from the feds, which lumber them with enormously expensive programs that are required by law but leave the funding up to the states. So it works both ways.

the problem is too much of this deficit went to banks, not jobs.

the problem is deficits are great for job creation, but too many compromises were made by making a third the stimulus tax cuts.....by handing out money to banks and not getting it back.

time to get a bit more socialistic, I'd say, because otherwise there ain't gonna be any more stimulus and it's a big fuck you to the 18 million unemployed, because Obama put the bankers first.

The fact that Beyonce has 28 competitive Grammys (solo or with Destiny's Child) and David Bowie has none, (he has a special life achievement Grammy) makes me want to projectile vomit.

I hear you, Michael. By the way, guess how many Grammys Jimi Hendrix has won.

It's not about music, it's about "show biz." Always has been, and probably always will be.

@10 Putting the money into infrastructure jobs that are going to be completed in 5 to 10 years, and are not going to contribute to a more stable economy is only......INCREASING THE DEFICIT and doing nothing to solve the underlying problems with the economy. While it would be nice to be able to give everyone who is jobless a job, it sadly doesn't make sense. The economy needs to be able to support those jobs on its own, without being funded by the federal government.

Real Republicans are aware that the deficit quadrupled when Pelosi and the democraps took over Congress, and quadrupled again when Obama came along.
Run the numbers- $100 Billion to $400 Billion to $1.6 Trillion.

The markets love the new budget - according to foreign business news, 13 to 16 of the 26 lines of business in the US are now firing on all cylinders, and the rest are doing pretty well.

The main problem is still the banks - they need to be Trust Busted and broken up into constituent lines of business, and forced to start putting capital back into US small business and consumer lines instead of shipping it to speculative ventures in China.

@4 - not true.

We could end two wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, Drug) and we'd be in the black today.

I think you meant "politically" we can't end the deficit now. It's all because the Dems have no fire in the belly and let themselves get painted into corners.

@18 Will, I agree that Iraq and Afghanistan are enormously expensive, but do you have numbers on the cost of the drug war? I assume you're not adjusting there for ancillary expenses - public health costs, the increased workload for the FDA to enforce quality standards, and of course the extra revenue from taxation.

I just have a hard time believing that the savings from the drug war would be on the same scale as those from our Middle Eastern wars.
