Today in the Impending Robot Revolution

Korea is about to get weirder:

"By around 2015, robots should be able to help teachers in English classes. By 2018, they should be able to teach on their own while communicating with students," said Kim Shin-hwan, an economist at the Hyundai Research Institute.

Oh, dear. We're all in trouble if those students start repeating things like "does not compute" or "I'm a friend of Sarah Connor. I was told she was here. Could I see her, please?"

(Thanks to Slog tipper Brian.)

"I say, old chap, you must learn to roll your r's more when you're referring to the Queen's Primroses"

Hope they have enough bowler hats for those English robot teachers.

A Korean economist. If anybody has their finger on the pulse of humanity, it's this guy.

I am too overwhelmed by the amount of bullshit in that article to even comment.

I think that the article is really about latent xenophobia. Koreans want Westerners to teach them English, but don't like Westerners living in Korea. The first 'solution' will be teleconferencing (because folks learn so well when their teacher isn't there and has a second lag) followed closely by robots. Sounds keen if you're a Korean who wants Westerners to leave your country.

@7, I'm guessing it's more to do with the cost of those teachers, not where they're from. If the government can get rid of them, it will free up money for the subsidies that the guy admits are necessary if this product is going to sell.

The whole article is a sales pitch, and that bit about the robots offering "more equal opportunities" to students is 100% crap.
