This Story From India Is Damn Funny

Posted by on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 11:27 AM

BBC reports:

An Indian politician is calling for a police force to be created to protect statues she has erected of herself and her mentors.

The chief minister of Uttar Pradesh state, Mayawati, says her political opponents want to demolish the statues.

A bill proposing the force has been introduced in the state assembly, to be debated at a later date.

Ms Mayawati, who is popular with a segment of Indian society that was once designated as the "untouchables," has spent $1 billion on statues of herself and her followers.

People complain about Nickels and Gregoire (and will be about McGinn soon), but they never pull this kind of shit. A billion dollars? A BILLION?

It's always good to be reminded that, as bad as this place can be sometimes, much of the world is even more corrupt.

This story ain't nothin'. When you really find out what's happening in the rest of the world and how everyone else lives, it makes American whining look completely embarrassing.

@2 - it's always good to be reminded that the Sovereign Wealth Funds of countries that aren't part of America now have as many rights in America as our Citizens.

That said, India has had functioning civilization far longer than even any of the EU countries, other than perhaps Italy or Greece.

$1 billion US, or a billion rupees or whatever? Either way it's staggering, but given the relative value of certain currencies it may not be as bad as it seems...

Will, it's also comforting to see that you have your head so far up your ass that you have to unbutton your shirt to talk. Just another day on Slog.

"...critics accuse her of self-glorification and wasting public money in what is one of India's poorest states." Can we nominate that phrase for Understatement of the Year?

@6: The BBC article clearly states One Billion US Dollars. Mind boggling, isn't it?
