The prolific novelist who chronicled the lifestyles of Manhattan's most wealthy families has died at age 92.

I've only read a couple of Auchincloss's novels. The best one was The Scarlet Letters, a reimagining of Hawthorne's novel. It was a very old-fashioned, thoughtful novel: Ornate, beautiful writing about adults, responsibility, and heartbreak.

In the years since I read Letters, I've bought a bunch of Auchincloss's novels when I come across them in used bookstores for future reading. If you like Wharton or Austen, you might want to give him a try.

I read Diary of a Yuppie every 5 or 6 years or so, and it always seems fresh.

Sorry to hear this. I first read Auchincloss after Gore Vidal praised his work in a 1974 article in "The New York Review of Books" and he's been a favorite ever since; his short storie are very fine too.

Vidal had this to say about Auchincloss:

"Of all our novelists, Auchincloss is the only one who tells us how our rulers behave in their banks and their boardrooms, their law offices and their clubs."
