Shooting on Capitol Hill

Posted by on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 3:06 PM

Seattle police responded to a call about about 15 minutes ago regarding an assault with a weapon on Capitol Hill, according to the 911 log. A Slog tipper says that there may have been a shooting. On the police scanner, officers say they are taping off the the streets around Boylston Avenue East and East Roy Street, in front of the Harvard Exit Theater. I have a call in to SPD and will update this post if I hear anything more.

UPDATE: Capitol Hill Seattle reports, "shots fired and a man down and bleeding on Boylston near Broadway," and that the victim "was found with a gunshot wound near an apartment building."

SAD UPDATE: "All evidence indicates self-inflicted," says CHS.

It happend behind my building - there's a shooting victim by our back door. It doesn't look like he's going to make it. The Gang Unit is here, and Homicide people are taking pictures. Also people are up on the neighboring building roof looking around. There's a helicoptor flying above.

Yep it's crazy down there. They taped off the street, and there are medics there too.

Police spokesperson confirms it was self-inflicted and "there is no cause for alarm."

Yeah, very sad.

Uh - no. "Self-inflicted" is best-case. It's the farthest from sad you can get in a story that includes a gun and a body.

And there's no information about this person. Who knows what they were up against. It might have been the best solution.

His name was Ben Chambers and you all need to be ashamed for making fun of such a tradgedy. He was a good guy, a friend of mine. He struggled with gender identity, alcoholism and un checked mental illness. He came from a pentacostal family, which only served to add to his list of problems. Many of us who knew him and loved him mourne such a senseless end to a life of a person who struggled so hard to make sense of who he was and what his place in the world was. If you were inconvenienced by his end of life facts were, tough. Imagine what a tough path he had to travel, and what must have have been such a hopeless state of mind he had to bring him to this point. He will be missed by many. To make a joke of this only serves to show your lack of any sensitivity you show here. I hope you, your children, brothers, sisters or parents never have to feel so hopeless to consider suicide. I will miss him and only wish he could have seen the humor, joy and creativity he brought to the world by his presence he brought to our lives. The reactions I have seen in this forum make me glad I left Seattle. Shame on your jaded, insensitive and heartless reactions. He was a good person, lost in his problems, and when it happens to someone you love, you can muster up a little more compassion than what I see here.

Ben was also a good friend of mine... Even though we grew apart these last couple of years, I will always remember his quick wit. He was my partner in crime, and will be greatly missed.
