Alleged Gay Bashing at the Moore Hotel

In the early afternoon of Friday, January 22, a man contacted police to report an assault that allegedly occurred the previous night at the Moore Hotel in downtown Seattle. According to a police report, the victim said that he checked in to the hotel around 5:00 p.m. with a female guest, and was set to "do a Cabaret show" later in the evening.

Several hours later, he and the guest returned to the hotel, where a nighttime desk clerk confronted them regarding payment for the room. The clerk "seemed to suggest that they did not have the funds to pay for the room and became enraged," the report says. The hotel guests insisted that they'd already paid on a credit card. A brief verbal argument ensued between the three people, during which time, another hotel employee showed up.

The man's friend finally agreed to just pay the bill to end the argument. But as they walked to the elevator, the friend asked the night clerk why he was being such a "dick." The other hotel employee, according to the officer, said "at least he wasn't going to get 'AIDS.'"

The man, clearly offended by the remark, said, "fuck you" to the clerk. "At that moment, both [hotel employees] grabbed victim and dragged him from the elevator and threw him to the concrete outside," the police report says. During the assault, SPD records continue, the man's friend was "slammed into the wall."

Once outside, the night clerk walked away, but the other employee stood by and stated, "I get off work in 20 minutes, faggot, so stick around," according to the SPD records. Once again, the victim said "fuck you" and walked away from the scene. The officer noted that the victim "had evident injury to his left wrist (swollen), and abrasions to his left hand and right elbow."

The next day, the hotel manager was contacted, and he "apologized for the events," the report says. He added that "he would pay all [the victims'] medical bills from the event."

That sucks. The Moore staff all used to be super-gay-friendly, though that didn't keep me from catching crabs from a bed there once.

Please name the hotel employees when you can. They deserve a lifetime of their gay bashing as their #1 google search results - along with federal hate crime charges.

Yeah, paying the bills is nice but firing the assholes (if it checks out) would go a long way, too!

That's some serious shit. D-bag needs to realize that gay-bashing in Seattle leaves a higher chance of the gaybasher getting their own ass kicked by bystanders.

Queue the public apology by the manager, confirmation of a firing as well as felony charges for the dickbag. He should be deported back to the south.

Is it true that the Moore hotel is full of (non-gay) bed bugs?

They still rent out rooms at the Moore? Who knew?

That's the hotel that a lot of newly arrived/newly out gay boys stayed at when they first came to town, back in the day.

Does this mean I can't go for a cocktail at the Lamplighter?

Calm down angry mob. That whole story is from the police report of what one guy said. You can't take managements offer to pay as an agreement to the details of the report. Or you can I guess- see if I care. It seems like kindof an anti-gay witchhunt is on these days though.

1.) Drag queen checks into Moore Hotel with bad credit card.

2.) Desk clerk confronts her on it. Abashed friend makes good on drag queen's bad debt.

3.) Friend then mouths off to desk clerk.

4.) Drag queen and friend get in fight with desk clerk and other hotel employee. They lose.

5.) Suddenly, it's gay persecution time!

6.) Hotel management, knowing a stink when they see one, offer to pay for all medical costs.

7.) Drag queen gets lap band and cheekbone implants.

8.) Everyone feels good about their outrage

@13: Possibly, but if the drag queen and friend assaulted the hotel employees unprovoked, the employees should probably have filed a police report by now, which means that people subscribing to this theory should provide evidence of such report or just stop talking.

Yeah I have a hard time calling this gay bashing. The guy wasn't (apparently) assaulted because he's gay; he was assaulted because he was being an ass. Or at least, one could interpret his behavior as ass-like. Calling a fag a fag while beating him up for something besides being a fag is just everday assault in my view.

You know what surprises me about this article? Hundreds of completely unfounded and bogus police reports get filed every day, and yet SLOG chose to print this particular one.

Now, I know quite a few people who work for the Moore and I would be astounded if any of them would actually utter the words that have been sighted. Let's see, a drunk person wandered into a hotel, got reminded that they needed to settle the bill, and got enraged. When they didn't get the result they would have liked to see, they victimized themselves, called the police and pointed fingers, siting - gasp - their sexuality. No, this sounds completely plausible.

We should take their word as the holy gospel, and interviewing of the hotel management is completely unnecessary. Oh yeah, there's a question of defamation I suppose, so we will just prefix the claim with the word "alleged", thus emanating integrity. Ready to print.

Let's hope that the "unpaid intern" will go unpaid for as long as possible, lest we should see this sort of thing in an actual newspaper.

So, verbally harassing someone because of their orientation until they tell you to "fuck off" and THEN attacking them isn't a gay bashing because they were rude back?

WHEN WILL THOSE GAYS LEARN THEIR PLACE

Yeah, the bitch was asking for it & the n***er deserved the lynching cuz he got uppity.

Pardon me for taking side w/ the person who appears to be suffering under a code of behavior that has existed for _thousands_ of years (violently attacking gay men), and not choosing to get all 'hip' & 'hollywood-esque' by claiming the victim is actually... The Perpetrator!!! Pat yourself on the back, you're so smart, you're almost Sherlock Holmes.

Or, it could just be Occam's Razor, a claimed gay bashing is actually that, a gay bashing. Who would have thought something so common would be so common?

Or it could be that the drag queen is lying to cover up her credit card fraud.

I don't think the motive here is gay bashing, but the fact the victim tried to rent a hotel room with a bogus credit card. The homophobic slurs make these employees seem like fucking assholes that should be fired for not being professional, but a felony for gay bashing seems ridiculous when it was essentially the victim's friend that instigated the whole incident.

This is a enough of an accusation to be taken seriously. If the hotel has offered to pay the bill then something happened to make them think it was serious, too.

I've heard of drunk late night scuffs that seem to be a stretch to call a bashing ( just really ugly and drunk &stupid).
But I would not dismiss this out of hand. Telling drag queens you could get aids from touching them and someone getting thrown to the pavement seems like pretty uncool. I'm not willing to give the Moore hotel people a break here. I need to hear more.

@13 "5.) Suddenly, it's gay persecution time!"

Sorry dude, as an employee you don't get into physical squabbles. I hope they're immediately fired regardless of whether it's "persecution" or not.

@20 Yeah, the first thing I'd do if I'd been trying to pull off a credit card fraud is to run file a police report. You betcha.

Slog is so fucking credulous.
In the old days a Southern white could yell "rape" and a black would end up on a rope in the town square. No questions asked...
In Seattle the right kind of folks can yell "gaybashing" and someone ends up fired.
No questions asked...

Grabbing this person and physically throwing them out of the building on to the ground, after the billing issue had been resolved, is highly unprofessional behavior (not to mention assault and battery) regardless of what specific words were used during the altercation. On those grounds alone, the two employees should be fired. The fact that they chose to use anti-gay slurs just makes the situation worse.

Well, talk about raising some issues. Having stayed at the Moore on a number of occasions and knowing that at least one of the clerks is gay (guess which one) and seeing all sorts of antics by guests I am not surprised by this. We don't really know what happened. What we have read is an account by "someone" who most likely doesn't have all the facts. Remember Peter Salanger and the UFO's ? Or does anyone think for them self these days. Not to agree that being physical for the sake of being physical is right as a matter of fact I agree that it's wrong. If in fact that's what happened. My suggestion "like anyone cares" get all your facts before you print that way you don't have to print a retraction. As for the management offering to pay medical, that was a good move because if the employee's did what was "alleged" then better safe than sorry. If they didn't well that was just a kind thing to do even if the guy was a drunk jerk "which I am not saying he was". But I have seen plenty of them wander in and try to cause a scene. Drunk, High, Gay, Straight, Fat, Skinny, Black, White, Yellow, Red or all of them and more rolled into one. Facts please.
