Good Grades Are Important

Posted by on Fri, Jan 22, 2010 at 10:47 AM

But so is avoiding life-ruining trauma.

38-year-old Lynn Middlebrooks Geter of Warm Springs [Georgia] faces one charge each of animal cruelty, child cruelty and battery....after police say she forced her son to kill his pet hamster with a hammer as punishment for bad grades.

To paraphrase Dan, every child deserves a mother and a hammer. Also, Jesus fuck.

Throwing them in the freezer works pretty well.

Because certainly she couldn't just give the hamster to someone else.

@3 Making your son kill his pet with a hammer "doesn't sound too horrible"?

Are you insane? Or a serial killer?

"Also, Jesus fuck."

No, no. That's an understatement. I think this qualifies for a "Jesus fuck, fuck, fucketty-fuck".

@10 - not just you.

And the "Berlin fashion week" image on the same page as the article epitomizes why I can't comprehend the fashion business. How is that not a joke?

I'm reminded of the story of Osama bin Laden killing his son's dog with chemical warfare gas. Every child needs indeed.

@13. Dude. Hamsters live like 2 or 3 years. Seriously. If you think your situation is unstable enough that you can't handle a two year commitment to an animal, don't take on the responsibility.

If you can't take care of a hamster anymore and no one you know wants it, put it and the cage, etc. on craigslist or freecycle to give away. Or go old-school and set up in the grocery store or Wal-mart parking lot with a sign that says free hamster/cage. When you get a pet, you take on the responsibility of caring for it, or taking the time to find it a new home when you're unable to do so.

If your hamster dies, or say, your cat brings in a dead mouse, just throw it out onto the middle of the street. The crows will take it from there.

Or if you live somewhere with a decent climate, it wouldn't be the worst thing just to let it go. When I was a kid, I had a hamster that escaped outside for like three weeks. We found her while hunting for eggs on Easter, munching on a plant. I think she was living in the woodpile. It had even snowed while she was out there. Not that I'm advocating letting hamsters go in the wild but for christ's sake it's better than bashing their poor little brains in.

3 is clearly sociopathic.

@21 - This is how we get infestations of exotic pests. Don't let shit go. There are now breeding populations of pythons in the Everglades because of this awful attitude.

Bashing in their brains is probably last on the list for me, too, but release is only just above that. You're consigning them to death by talons or cat, or starvation or freezing, not to mention the potential environmental impacts.

I'm from Georgia, and it is idiots like her that keep us looking bad. Jeez.... RIP little hamster.

I hope the kid doesn't become a serial killer.

Letting it go is definitely not preferable... but for a hamster (not a python or a cat), in the right environment, it's probably not the end of the world if your alternative is the freezer or the hammer. Where I grew up, the odds of there being another hamster for it to breed with in the woods behind my house were probably nil. Sure, the thing probably would have been eaten by a hawk eventually, but at least it would be food for something instead of being, well, thrown in the garbage.

Obviously this is way beyond this psycho's parenting skills, but making a kid's pet ownership contingent on anything other than the kid properly caring for the pet is really shitty. Find some other way to punish your kid for not behaving, getting good grades, whatever.

David,

Yes, this child does deserve a mother and a hammer. So he can hit her with the hammer.

For all the times my dad hit me I wish I could've hit him back.
