WA May Recognize Same-Sex Marriages from Other States

Posted by news intern Jon Brock

On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee passed a bill that would recognize same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions (e.g., Massachusetts and Iowa) as equivalent to Washington's state-registered domestic partnerships. The bill has been moved on to the Rules Committee, which will decide whether to forward the bill to the state house floor. Speaking with Rep. Jamie Pedersen (D-43), the sponsor of the bill, he said, "There is very little question that we would have enough votes to pass it in the house." As to whether or not it will survive in the state senate, Pedersen added, "There isn't any point in passing it out of the house if it can't pass in the senate."

You know, if corporations and unions have no limits on campaign donations, neither do gay groups.

Just saying.

What about marriages in foreign countries? Canada, Sweden, etc.?

Will Dan Savage finally get legal recognition of his Canadian marriage? Would that mean he's no longer living in sin? (Perish the thought.)

Jon quoted Jamie Pederson as saying, "There isn't any point in passing it out of the house if it can't pass in the senate."

Jon, did you ask Pederson if he keeps a crystal ball around to determine what Senate support will be like so he can determine when the House should bother trying to pass legislation? What if the Senate doesn't express support for a bill because they think there's no point in expressing support if a bill can't pass the House, and the House doesn't pass a bill because they think there's no point in passing it if it can't pass the Senate?
