So What Happens to Health-Care Legislation Now?

Posted by on Wed, Jan 20, 2010 at 8:09 AM

New York Times:

The election left Democrats in Congress scrambling to salvage a bill overhauling the nation’s health care system, which the late Mr. Kennedy had called “the cause of my life.” Mr. Brown has vowed to oppose the bill, and once he takes office the Democrats will no longer control the 60 votes in the Senate needed to overcome filibusters.

There were immediate signs that the bill had become imperiled. House members indicated they would not quickly pass the bill the Senate approved last month.

And after the results were announced, one centrist Democratic senator, Jim Webb of Virginia, called on Senate leaders to suspend any votes on the Democrats’ health care legislation until Mr. Brown is sworn into office. The election, he said, was a referendum on both health care and the integrity of the government process...

Although the race has riveted the nation largely because it was seen as contributing to the success or defeat of the health care bill, the potency of the issue for voters here was difficult to gauge. That is because Massachusetts already has near-universal health coverage...

Thanks a lot, Massachusetts.

Such lamentations over wounded pride.

If Dems can stay a wee bit focused on the bill itself they can pass it, even if in a stupider-yet form, and move on. That's what will save lives. That's what will advance the agenda.

Sure, we failed to leverage this into the opposition-crushing we'd hoped for, but so what? That was just a secondary goal, right? Right?

Health care reform is dead in the water. As is just about everything else on Obama's agenda.

Yes, thank you Massachusetts for electing someone into office who understands universal health care, has a populist platform and realizes that the Senate health care bill is a CROCK OF SHIT and won't let it pass.

Thanks a lot!

No.
Thanks a lot, Obama.

Why would Massachusetts want to pay for it's own state plan and also pay for Nebraska?
The Obama/Democrat plan was shit rendered into law.
Don't blame Massachusetts voters for having a sense of smell....

I like the friendly fire from Jim Webb. Nice. The Dems should club the fuckers on their team who break ranks. And by club, I mean not give them federal campaign cash. And support other candidates in primaries.

Also: this Canadian has his own crazy right-wing federal government to worry about. A lot of us expect an assault on public health care if Stephen Harper's Conservatives get elected. We need leadership from you Americans, not bullshit. So fuck you Massachusetts.

I should say, get elected to a majority. They're already elected.

To vote Democratic, Massachusetts voters would essentially be voting to tax themselves for health care in ass-backwards states that don't have the access to coverage that they already enjoy. Combine that with a campaign that was hitting the snooze button every ten minutes, and the result can hardly be surprising.

The democrats never had a 60 vote majority. There was always Lieberman.

Considering Massachusetts already has universal healthcare, I think this means they didn't want healthcare for the other 49 states.
The next person who tells me they're from Boston gets kicked in the nuts.
