From the Desk of Anyone But Frank Chopp

Posted by on Tue, Jan 19, 2010 at 10:04 AM

Yesterday I pointed to a new Facebook page set up by "Anyone But Frank Chopp," and fired off a message trying to figure out who's behind the effort.

Today brings a response to my query—and to some of the comment criticism about this needing to be a fan page rather than a page soliciting friends. (For the record, as of 10 a.m. today, ABFC had 40 friends. Again, that's not exactly an insurrection in the making. Yet.)

I'm just a lowly citizen in the 43rd who shares the frustration of many groups that feel we could and should have a more progressive voice in Olympia.

There's a fan page that I set up that is the real place that I think people should focus, and bat around names for a potential challenger. If Mike McGinn can be elected mayor against significant establishment, then we in the 43rd should be able to find someone to unseat Chopp.

This page is solely to have friends added to be invited to the fan page. And, of course, to get the requisite blurbs to increase the fan base and/or friend base (which is admittedly low, but there are many months before filing deadline, and the legislative session has yet to really kick in in earnest).

Is it snowing somewhere in the 43rd?

Has Frank been beating his wife in public? Flashing at head start classes? Drunk and slobbering and yelling fuck you a lot in public night after night?

No. Sorry, wasting your time.

And frankly, you all need to get clue who the political enemies are out there - there are tons just a few mile out of comfort zone Seattle.

40 is not a lot, this much is true. I have had correspondence with a few people who would, but are wary of taking on Chopp.

Of course, the page has only been up for a few days, with limited outreach.

Wait to see what bills Chopp doesn't allow to be heard on the House Floor. Wait to see how he applies pressure to not have a vote on marijuana decriminalization (at the bare minimum). Watch how he proposes more and more cuts to higher education, instead of standing up to the right on the GOP side, and in his own party.

It will take one hell of an effort to unseat Frank Chopp, and first and foremost, there must be someone willing to stand up and be either the sacrificial lamb, or David to his Goliath. Hopefully there are enough people willing to support a competent candidate, that we may see one come out and declare.

I agree with Fred. And also, replacing Frank Chopp will not make the newly elected member Speaker of the House. That decision is put to a vote in the House of Representatives. His replacement would most likely be a middle of the road Democrat who may be less progressive and certainly less organized than Speaker Chopp.

Frank Chopp isn't perfect, but he's the best we have.

I don't see what could go wrong with this.

Sure as hell wasn't me. You need to spend more time asking why the 43rd isn't carrying our water like the 36th does. The Speaker has a different role, as everyone knows.

It probably really is Will ;-)

All I have to say is that I have seen Speaker Chopp more involved in the 43rd than anyone (followed closely by Rep. Pedersen). Specifically, of course, I speak about the Party, but coming out to our meetings is an endurance test at times.

Whoever is behind this little stunt is a moron. "Anyone"? Really? Maybe they can get the Stranger to endorse a Tub of Mayonnaise again, and actually win that one.

Oh, and definitely come to the 43rd's monthly meeting. Get a good look at what it is we do. It's awesome. (and we are also having a State of the Union Watch Party next week - I'm thinking a drinking game of a shot every time Obama says "Now let me be clear")

@8 - if it was me, it would have 6000 members by now - you know that I grew up doing winning campaigns in tougher places than this, michael.

See you all tonight at University Heights - aren't we supposed to have a fun party pretty soon?

@10 - Did you not see the wink??? I know that you wouldn't do something like this...and if you did, you would be open about it.

Although, the page does list needing 6000 people to donate time and money...maybe it really is you!!! ;-) (see, the wink again)

And yes, there will be an awesome party with other districts, too!!!

@12 -

Probably is. I really need to pay better attention to what I'm doing when I've been drinking ;-)

I don't see it lasting long. I actually like Frank quite a bit. But then again, I also really like Mallahan. HA!
