See Ya, Filibuster-Proof Majority

Posted by on Mon, Jan 18, 2010 at 2:12 PM

A new poll:

A new InsiderAdvantage poll conducted exclusively for POLITICO shows Republican Scott Brown surging to a nine-point advantage over Martha Coakley a day before Massachusetts voters trek to the ballot box to choose a new senator.

According to the survey conducted Sunday evening, Brown leads the Democratic attorney general 52 percent to 43 percent.

"I actually think the bottom is falling out," said InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery, referring to Coakley's fall in the polls over the last ten days. "I think that this candidate is in freefall. Clearly this race is imploding for her."

Well, that was a good one-year run. It's a good thing Democrats seized the opportunity to, um, never mind.

so now Biden is forced to exercise his President pro tempore of the senate, raise a point of order against the filibuster and call for a change in the rules of the senate ...then *then* congress will become a land of milk and honey for the democratic party; all good progressive things will be accomplished and the birds (or Byrds) will sing! what..? you find this unlikely?! have you lost your faith in the political system?! ...egad, god save our fragile republic from or cynical youth, (o tempora o mores ...etc)

A filibuster-proof democratic congress is about the same as a republican controlled congress, so I'm not really optimistic either way.

It's not like they used it when they had it.

@2: either that, or when they threaten a filibuster, instead of instantly caving in, invite them to have at it. Let them stand up and obstruct Senate business in front of the CSPAN cameras until their fat, twitchy little fists won't pound the table anymore. It'll be fun. Or it would be fun if there were Democrats who knew how to capitalize on a spectacle like that.

It's a new world's record! Obama is now the first President to have become a "lame duck" before completing his first year in office.

Coakley's would-be colleagues probably have done far more damage to her campaign than she herself has. Senate Democrats, as a group, have earned a lot of ill will toward the Democratic Party.

Next up in the Democratic Party play book: the party faithful blame their party's biggest target market for being too leftist, too unrealistic, blah blah blah. Basically the Democratic Party will attempt to portray its own failures as a natural consequence of voter apathy.

This will become especially heated when the Democrats lose themselves both houses of Congress as well as the presidency in a couple more years.

DOUG. 9
The notion that the Democrats ever had a "filibuster-proof majority" is a farce. Specter? Lieberman? Yeah, right...

I find it difficult to believe that in possibly the bluest state in the country they are going to elect a Republican to fill Ted Kennedy's seat. I'm going to say these polls look dubious. Boston Globe had Coakley up by like 15 points a couple of weeks ago. Is InsiderAdvantage at all reputable? Never heard of them. Suffolk University? Are they polling anyone besides white fatheads from Southy?

Hey gripers: every consider the fact that possibly the dems who have frustrated your Utopian dreams are doing something as simple as representing their consituents? I mean Lieberman does not have such an excuse, he is just a perfect ass (and I am from CT so I know he has been a perfect ass since day one), but Ben Nelson? Last I looked Nebraska was pretty well firmly situated in the Real America. That means Ben Nelson largely owes his job to at least part time Fox News viewers. Would he be representing these consituents if he caved to the progressive agenda? I would say he may be pushing his luck as it is.

@11 - Are you implying that Faux News viewers are "Real America"? Because you don't sound like you're retarded.

Suffice to say that "representing their consituents" is nowhere near the Senate Dems' radar...

It doesn't matter, because the Dems never used their majority to do anything anyway.

Maybe that poll is as accurate as all of the polls were in Seattle's mayor race.

I'm sorry, did I fall asleep and miss the part where we had 60 Democrats in the Senate? Looks like 51 Democrats, 7 Blue Dogs, and 2 Independents in there to me.

@12 Uh yeah. Here's a little help: Sarah Palin - Real America.

And yeah I am saying they are concerned about representing their constituents, as in they are concerned about getting re-elected, except for Lieberman who is just concerned with being an obstuctionist prick.

Paul Krugman has an op/ed that I agree with most of (disagreeing with the meme of Faux News and the teabaggers). I don't think Obama has done too much by any estimation, and I think it might be this ridiculous idea of trying to find bipartisan solutions. On top of that, the lack of financial services reforms should be gauling to any taxpayer in this country. Another bubble is building in the meantime, and we're going to be deeper.

That would really be a shame if the successor to Ted Kennedy, a democrat known to try very hard to work at compromise with the republicans, ended up being a republican elected solely to stop a single bill from passing and stubbornly oppose all compromise.

Oh- it's much better than that...

That will really be ironic when the successor to Ted Kennedy, a democrat known to try very hard to work at compromise with the republicans,
and for whom a National Healthcare Bill was soooo near and dear to his heart,
ends up being a republican elected solely to stop a single bill from passing,
and that single bill is the National Healthcare Bill that was soooo near and dear to Teddy's heart,
and stubbornly oppose all compromise.

You really can't make this stuff up...

"In an e-mail to reporters, with a subject line of "Don't Buy This Skewed Poll," DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse laid out his reasons to doubt the survey results:

1.It was conducted in one night - which is notoriously unreliable
2.It has a 20 percent Republican sample - which is 5-8 points more than most polls. Obviously skewing the sample more Republican than the electorate is - is going to skew the result in Brown's favor.
3.The poll was conducted, and the charged quotes in the article are attributed to, a former aide to NEWT GINGRICH - which Politico pointed in the 6th paragraph.
4.Does anyone really believe - as this skewed poll shows - that Brown is going to win 77% of Hispanics and 26% of blacks? Those results alone should ring alarm bells about the accuracy of this poll."

You know, they haven't been using that majority to accomplish squat anyway, so it's not like we'll really miss it.

It's amazing how the Democratic leadership can manage to arrive at a strategy of "dither, appease, compromise, and capitulate" from a position of overwhelming advantage.

Handwringing aside, theophrastus@2, thank you so so much for waking up what was a long-dormant earworm ("O tempora, o mores!"). So I don't have to suffer alone, any other masochists can go here, where you will notice in the upper left a handy midi link (marked "Melodie").

I find this poll suspect as well. If Coakley wins by a safe margin, I hope the troll @22 (and many other places) will do the honorable thing, run headlong into a brick wall, and swear off Slog for at least a week.

Actually the troll @22 finds the poll highly suspect.
And will be shocked- SHOCKED if Brown wins.
really.
But it is a fun ride while it lasts.....

Actually, the Dems only have had 58 Dems and two independents on their side for four months of the last 12 months. Franken joined in mid-summer and Arlen Spector later.
