Prop 8 Trial — Day 4: Gay Weddings Help the Economy and Discrimination Is Unhealthy

Posted by on Thu, Jan 14, 2010 at 6:28 PM

Bloggers remain affixed firmly to their seats in a federal courtroom in San Franciso for the trial—undoubtedly a preview of a Supreme Court showdown—over the initiative that banned gay marriage. There were two central witnesses making two main points.

One made a solid, conservative business argument:

A San Francisco economist testified today that same-sex weddings would generate more than $35 million in annual spending in San Francisco and produce millions of dollars in additional tax revenue.

Edmund Egan, chief economist for the city and county of San Francisco, said he based his short-term projections on the revenue generated by more than 5,000 same-sex weddings in San Francisco during the five months in 2008 when gay marriage was legal.

The second argued that discrimination wears on mental health:

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ended the longest day of the Prop 8 trial. Columbia professor Ilan Meyer, a plaintiffs expert, concluded his testimony on the impact of discrimination on the mental health of the gay community. While the judge has been impatient at times with the length of questioning from lawyers on both sides, he seemed intrigued by Meyer's testimony and the debate over how stress and mental health impacts are measured on minority groups, scribbling notes throughout the afternoon.

As a Republican, I would love to get the Gay Marriage issue off the table forever by legalizing it.

Opponents will probably argue that it would put lots of psychiatrists and mental health workers out of business, as well as hurting sales of anti-depression meds.

Thank you for the gay wishing evening....however I stumbled onto this well-written and slightly dubious quote,

"You killed our children before my eyes," the officer says meekly. "I will respond with even more peace."

(please ignore, for there is a new fascinating e-reader being developed, where satirical diplomacy is encouraged, though only for those who read braille between the lines)

Imagine.

50 states with gay marriage ratified and also Guam and U.S. Territories by 2012.

It would no longer be an issue that wold even drives people to the polls.

Judge Walker is a World Class Moron.

The constitutionality of Proposition 8 does not hinge on how many millions in annual spending in San Francisco same-sex weddings would generate.

The constitutionality of Proposition 8 does not hinge on how many millions of dollars in additional tax revenue same-sex weddings would generate.

The constitutionality of Proposition 8 does not hinge on the mental health of the gay community.

Those very interesting issues are totally irrelevent to the matter before Judge Walker.

His little Dog and Pony Exibition is a bizzare Judicial freak show.
The Supreme Court will not be amused or moved.
Even Liberal Justices will take the opportunity to smack Walker for his stupid impertinence.

Prop 8 upheld: 6-3.

@14 You ignorant dimwit.
This case does hinge on economic and psychological harm. Prop 8 was designed to harm LGBT people. Prop 8 doesn't further any legitimate, state interest. Prop 8 places discrimination into CA's constitution. Homophobia is on trial and, in a way, I am relieved that you are too stupid to understand that. "World Class Moron," indeed.

You are right on one point.
(just one)
"Homophobia" is on trial.
Walker is giving the Gays a forum to sob and whine.

"Bad Bad Heteros!..."

there...

feel better now?

The problem is that the constitutionality of Proposition 8 does not hinge on "homophobia", either.

As Political Theatre and Spectacle Walker's show is a doozy.
As Law goes it is an Embarrassment.
And a Travesty.
And a Diversion.

Every day the gays smugly congratulate themselves for all the Brilliant Insights they put on display down in SF.
Ignorant Bigots!
They got nothing!!
But it won't win your case.
It has Nothing to do with the issue before the court.

call names if it makes you feel better.
save up a few, however...
you'll be needing some for the Supreme Court, in a few months.

6-3.
