Bloggers remain affixed firmly to their seats in a federal courtroom in San Franciso for the trial—undoubtedly a preview of a Supreme Court showdown—over the initiative that banned gay marriage. There were two central witnesses making two main points.
One made a solid, conservative business argument:
A San Francisco economist testified today that same-sex weddings would generate more than $35 million in annual spending in San Francisco and produce millions of dollars in additional tax revenue.Edmund Egan, chief economist for the city and county of San Francisco, said he based his short-term projections on the revenue generated by more than 5,000 same-sex weddings in San Francisco during the five months in 2008 when gay marriage was legal.
The second argued that discrimination wears on mental health:
Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ended the longest day of the Prop 8 trial. Columbia professor Ilan Meyer, a plaintiffs expert, concluded his testimony on the impact of discrimination on the mental health of the gay community. While the judge has been impatient at times with the length of questioning from lawyers on both sides, he seemed intrigued by Meyer's testimony and the debate over how stress and mental health impacts are measured on minority groups, scribbling notes throughout the afternoon.
