Things I Have Found on the Ground, Part 1 in a Series

Found on the sidewalk at 11th and Pine.
  • Found on the sidewalk at 11th and Pine.

Why, it's a damp, wrinkled pencil portrait of Leon Czolgosz, the Polish-American anarchy enthusiast who assassinated President William McKinley in 1901! Czolgosz approached the President in a receiving line at the Pan-American Exposition with a handkerchief covering his hand. Under the handkerchief, in the hand, was a revolver. Czolgosz then used the revolver to shoot the President twice in the abdomen.

William J. Gomph, the exposition's official organist, was softly playing Schumann's Träumerei on the massive organ that was a special attraction at the Temple of Music. At this moment, 4:07 p.m., Czolgosz advanced to face the President. McKinley reached out to take Czolgosz's "bandaged" hand, but before he could shake it Czolgosz pulled the trigger twice. James Parker punched Czolgosz in the face and tackled him, knocking the gun from Czolgosz's hand. Agent George Foster jumped onto Czolgosz and shouted to fellow agent Albert Gallagher "Al, get the gun! Get the gun! Al, get the gun!" Gallagher instead got Czolgosz's handkerchief, which was on fire.

Czolgosz in jail, not being sorry for his crime.
  • Czolgosz in jail, not being sorry for his crime.
Then the crowd beat the shit out of Czolgosz. The President died six days later. Czolgosz was executed by electrocution on October 29, 1901.

His last words were "I killed the President because he was the enemy of the good people — the good working people. I am not sorry for my crime." As the prison guards strapped him into the chair, however, he did say through clenched teeth, "I am sorry I could not see my father." His brain was autopsied by Edward Anthony Spitzka. Sulfuric acid was thrown into his coffin so that his body would be completely disfigured, resulting in its decomposition within twelve hours. His letters and clothes were burned.

This is one of the best things I have ever found on the ground.

UPDATE: Slog reader and internet art sleuth Brendan writes:

did you really find this on the ground?
I found it here.
is this some sort of incomplete promo for a friend's web project?

I really, truly did find it on the ground outside my office. Hey, artist Drew Christie, I think you dropped your Czolgosz. Do you want him back? (He's kind of wet and brown now.)

That is very cool. What are the dimensions? Looks small judging by the photo's background.

Impossible name to look at the first time and correctly pronounce - it's CHOL-GOSH....for the trivially correct.

Lindy, are you aware that Stephen Sondheim wrote a song about Leon Czolgosz for the musical Assassins? Here's a fun clip that someone made using the 2004 Broadway cast recording, with Neil Patrick Harris singing!

The song starts at 0:40.

Bub, thanks for posting the link to Assassins. It's so hilariously incongruous to hear Neil Patrick Harris singing a paen to a presidential assassin. His voice seems more appropriate to songs about first love and puppies.

Here's a clip from the 2004 Tony Awards with more NPH and the Broadway cast. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJf9QQkZwls

This is great!

An aside: McKinley actually died of the infection from a botched operation to remove the bullet. The doctor called to treat him was a gynecologist who did not wash his hands before digging around in McKinley's sizable stomach to get the bullet out. Nor did he wash the wound. Pity the poor women under his care also.
