The Morning News: Bank Failures, Pokemon Nerds, Transit Costs, and Political Violence

Post it on Fail Blog: Horizon Bank of Bellingham, the 12th-largest bank in this state, has failed, and will cost the FDIC an estimated $539 million. It's also the first U.S. bank failure of 2010. Congratulations, Washington!

He's still not the first-best: Seattle 9-year-old is the second-best Pokemon player in the world.

Is it possible to keep them as house pets? Woodland Park Zoo will be closing its Nocturnal House, which includes fruit bats, two-toed sloth, and three-banded armadillo, due to a decline in revenue.

Snohomish Community Transit: Proposing fare increases and schedule cuts.

Spend to your heart's content: Preempting a Supreme Court decision, other courts have ruled for cutting back election financing restrictions.

Let's try this again: Afghan President Karzai has presented a new list of Cabinet nominees after 70 percent of his first picks were rejected by parliament.

It's best served cold: The Jordanian doctor that blew up seven CIA employees in a suicide attack claimed that it was revenge for the death of Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud. He also did it seconds before a security pat-down.

Iran still trying to kill its opposition: Outspoken critic of the recent government crackdown, Mehdi Karroubi, was shot at by Basiji militiamen in Qazvin.

You helped salvage my childhood: Art Clokey, the creator of Gumby, died yesterday at the age of 88.

U.S. Economy still stucks: Employers still unsure as to the security of hiring new employees at this juncture.

Oh yeah, you betcha, those were the days:

I'll bet you could whip up one hell of a feast using all those zoo animals. Mmm, good eats.

I just hope people realize these animals can't be set free. They'll go to other zoos. That's a shame. Support your zoo people. They do important work.

What ever happened to Bill Nye? He was a fine young actor. Oh yeah, he became a scientist for Disney. Holy crap! He was married by Rick Warren?

re: Jobs

"The job market remained in a deep funk in December, according to a government report Friday showing that employers view the economic recovery as too weak and too fragile to begin hiring again."

It's all about the Jobs, STUPID.

What has Obama done for you, lately?

NO! Not the nocturnal house! That was the first place I would drag my parents when we went! I am very bummed.

If you don't search someone for bombs until they are so close that they can blow up 7 CIA agents you are doing it wrong.

Also morning news:

Jim Mora is out as head coach of the Seahawks.

And the NYT has a good story about Seattle losing its NOAA Pacific fleet contract to uppity little Newport Oregon.

There is a meet-up at the Nocturnal House tomorrow to both visit the exhibit and show support for keeping it open.

Closing the night house pisses me off royally. It's BY FAR my favorite part of the zoo, and frequently the only place I'll go when I visit (I buy an annual pass, but no longer).

They have PLENTY of money for capital expenses, like the building the carousel is in, to say nothing of the carousel. And the Zoomazium. And the modern exhibits, like the jaguars and the penguins, which are all about the structures and not about the animals at all.

The mission statement of the zoo nowadays is "preserve and defend the executive staff".

And how much do you think they paid the lawyers to defend the frigging parking garage they never built? Or the architects to design it?

Almost Live was the only good reason to watch TV at 11:35 on a Saturday night. "You pay for the whole road, use the whole road!"

What's the difference between the 9 y/o pokémon player and the rest of the players?

At his age, its okay to still be a virgin.

I loved Almost Live. I remember the "Cops in Kent" sketch where they were measuring women's hair to make sure it was big enough. This "Cops in Ballard" reminds me of a "Ballard Driving School" sketch where John Keister looked over at the speedometer while his student was driving and said, "Hey, you're going 5 mpg...where's the fire?"

I miss Almost Live so much that this clip has made my heart hurt. Is there anyway to bring it back? I love that we have enough material in WA alone to support an entire sketch comedy show. Not to mention one that hits it so on point almost every single time.

Things that I miss: Old Ballard.

Things I will miss: The Nocturnal House.

Now I am sad, but will youtube more Almost Live to see if that helps.

So, Almost Live was funny at some point? Because other than realizing that was Bill Nye the Science Guy, I got no enjoyment out of that clip. I tried watching that show when I lived downtown, and thought it was dumb then too. I figured it was because I didn't get the in-jokes that they rely so heavily on. Now I do, and it's still not funny.
