Picking a Dem in the 3rd District

Posted by on Thu, Jan 7, 2010 at 2:23 PM

As we wrote in this week's Stranger, it's not that heartbreaking to see Democratic Representative Brian Baird (of Vancouver, WA) go.

It is, however, hard to figure out which Democrat should now run for his seat. Hard, but urgent:

Representative Brian Baird wasn't anyone's idea of a reliable lefty. As a Democrat representing Washington's 3rd District—which covers the areas around Vancouver, down near the border with Oregon—he backed the Bush surge in Iraq and voted against health-insurance reform. But he was a five-term Democrat in a district that Bush won in both 2000 and 2004.

Now that Baird is leaving Congress to "pursue other options," his seat is up for grabs, and Republicans are saying, quite plausibly, that they can flip it into their hands.

So which Democrat is stepping up to stop them from doing that? About a half-dozen are in the mix...

Dwight Pelz, chair of the Washington State Democrats, won't take sides yet. "We have several strong democratic candidates running right now," he said. "We want to see who can get out there and get the most support before we let a good Democrat know we would like them to pull out of the race."

He should figure it out as quickly as possible. Time's a-wasting and Democrats need—way before the summer primary—to rally behind a single candidate if they want to hold on to this seat.

Among the Democrats circling the seat: lefty peace activist Cheryl Crist, a perennial contender; Deboarah Wallace, who represents the Vancouver area in the state house; Craig Pridemore, who represents Vancouver in the state senate; Maria Rodriguez Salazar, a Hispanic activist; and Denny Heck, a behind-the-scenes Olympia power broker who helped start TVW, the state’s public affairs network, made some smart investments, and is now said to be putting $100,000 into a campaign fund.

Let's see if Slog can do what we're demanding Pelz do: narrow the field.

Which Democrat should run in the 3rd District?

Money talks.

Republic party of No comrades and their fellow travelers in the anti-American Talibangelist field drive Saudi-fueled Hummers that help fund al-Qaeda, however.

"I helped create TV Washington" is more of an achievement to which more people can relate, than are the accomplishments of the other folks, as nice and liberal as those might be.
Plus being an Olympia insider yes gives Denny contacts and the ability to raise a shitload of money right away. My god, he's got 1000 politicians, donors and lobbyists on his rolodex, I mean his excel spreadsheets, already. Everyone knows him! Finally, short Anglo Saxon or Irish or Scotch names do pretty well in this rather homogenous State....they're worth about ten points more than obviously ethnic names...unless you're named Lars Lindqvuist or JackJohnMagnuJacobBergeson or something.

Sorry, Ms. Salazar.

I don't know any of these candidates, so I have no particular opinion.

I will say, however, that the 3rd District is only slightly left of center. Part of the reason that Baird was successful there was because of his vaguely conservative leanings. A very progressive candidate might make us all happy here in Seattle, but would stand no chance of getting elected in the 3rd District.

They'll either elect another centrist Democrat, or lose it to the Republicans.

Baird was perfect for the district. He wouldn't be a good fit for Seattle, but that district is nowhere near as liberal as Seattle. The only real liberal they've ever elected is Jolene Unsoeld, and she didn't last long. Then again, neither did the one barking-mad batshit conservative they elected (Linda Smith). It's a moderate swing district. It needs a moderate swing representative.

And Denny Heck announced his candidacy this morning.

Denny Heck was also a state legislator from Clark County, before he did TVW.

"Jolene Unsoeld...didn't last long."

She won three terms, moron.

Re: Jolene Unsoeld

The biggest thing that sank her candidacy was her not kow-towing to the Hand-Gun Control hand-wringers. At a LWV luncheon, she stated that she would uphold the 2nd Amendment. Pretty lightweight stuff, but it sent the blue-hairs into conniption fits.

It's just another cautionary tale about party purity. The GOP has yet to learn it, and I'm confident that the Tea-Bagging crowd is going to sink them this coming election cycle. Again, the person who wins the Dem primary wins the seat (Linda Smith notwithstanding).

About Denny

A product of Clark County with deep roots in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, Denny Heck is a progressive entrepreneur with a proven track record of creating jobs and economic opportunity in the private sector and getting things done through public service.

Denny is perhaps best known for founding TVW in 1993, the nation’s preeminent statewide public affairs television network from which he retired in 2003. While at TVW, he hosted the award-winning public affairs program, Inside Olympia, and also won an Emmy™ for a documentary he wrote and produced.

The Washington Coalition of Open Government honored Heck with its 2009 "James Madison Award" for his role in co-founding the TVW Channel, which debuted in 1995. A Seattle Times editorial praised Heck's "strong fight to bring CSPAN-style coverage to state government" and "helping to make government more transparent. “Heck,” the Times wrote, “who brought government into people's living rooms...embod(ies) the principles of open government." And the Olympian editorial board wrote, “TVW provides an important public service by throwing open the doors of government and educating residents about the workings of elected and appointed officials.”

Born in Vancouver in 1952, Denny was raised in the Lake Shore area of Clark County, where he graduated from Columbia River High School before attending and graduating from The Evergreen State College in Olympia in 1973.

Denny was an original investor in Real Networks, the digital entertainment company that pioneered streaming media on the Internet. He co-founded Intrepid Learning Solutions, a Washington State-based worker-training and learning business-services company with offices in several states; today, Denny serves on the company’s board of directors. He is also the co-owner of Bruin Development and is the lead investor and chairs the Board of Directors of Digital Efficiency, a company that provides electronic medical records solutions to health care providers. Both companies are based in Thurston County.

Denny served as Chief of Staff for Governor Booth Gardner during his second term (1989-93). In 1976, at the age of 24, he was elected to the first of five terms in the State House of Representatives from the 17th district in Clark, Skamania and Klickitat Counties. While serving in the House, Denny was chosen by his colleagues as Majority Leader, the second-ranking position in the House. He also co-chaired the Education Committee and wrote the state’s historic Basic Education Act.

Denny’s public service commitments are strong. He is a board member of the Washington State History Museum and serves on the Board of Trustees of The Evergreen State College. He served on Governor Gregoire’s recent blue ribbon Washington Learns Commission, where he chaired the Higher Education Committee. In 2008, he and his wife, Paula, helped establish the Principals’ Emergency Checkbook Fund for low income children in the Olympia Schools. They also endowed a scholarship at Columbia River High School in Vancouver in his brother Bob’s memory; Bob Heck served as a Marine in Viet Nam and passed away in 1981 from complications due to exposure to Agent Orange.

Denny has been married for 34 years to Paula Fruci Heck, a retired educator who began her career as a teacher and later served as a vice principal in the Evergreen School District. She retired as the principal of Jefferson Middle School in Olympia. Together, they have two sons, Bob, 25, a development officer at Willamette University and Trey, 18, a recent high school graduate.

Denny has written two books, one a nonfiction essay on education policy and the other a novel entitled The Enemy You Know. In 2008, he also wrote and performed a one-man play, entitled Our Times, which generated $30,000 in ticket sales all of which he and his wife donated to local Washington State charities.

@6 - Three terms is NOTHING for a Representative. Most of them last a hell of a lot longer than that.

Moron?! Gosh, way to stick to the topic.

Linda Smith was a fluke.

She got 52% against Jolene Unsoeld because it 1994 was a huge wave year for the Republicans, and because many of Unsoeld's supporters were unhappy over the gun stuff so they didn't work for her, and because the original Republican candidate withdrew on September 1 (due to his unpaid taxes) after spending over $1 million bashing Unsoeld and after paying his campaign staff to work for Smith the rest of the way. Basically, Smith got a free ride.

Then, in 1996, Smith got 50.2% against an unknown Democrat, who we now know as Brian Baird.

In 1998, Smith got her ass carved off, broiled at 450 degrees, and handing back to her on a platter, courtesy of Patty Murray. (Never underestimate Shorty Mom.) But that's another story.

It is highly unlikely the 3rd will elect a wingnut. Even a liberal progressive Dem (if a competent campaigner) would beat a wingnut in a heads-up general election.

Cheryl Crist was the only Democrat with the guts to run against Baird when it wasn't the popular thing to do. She'd be a vote to bring troops home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (and Pakistan), and spending that money here at home on things like health care and education.
The district isn't nearly as conservative as everyone thinks. In 2008, Baird and Crist combined beat the two Rs combined almost 2 to 1. Additionally, w/ the top-2 primary (and the state of the Republican party), it's more than possible that two Democrats survive August, leaving voters the choice between a centrist and a true progressive like Crist.

@12 "Baird and Crist combined beat the two Rs combined almost 2 to 1."

And Barry Bonds and I combined to set the home run record.

True, the 3rd is not as conservative as everyone things, but it's also not as progressive as you seem to think.

Denny Heck is a Corporate BLUEDOG in the waiting.

Craig Pridemore is an empty suit poser[check out his campaign website, he can't even make THAT photo believable.

Maria Salazar is a DOORMAT. [She's so out of the loop she's actually trying to sell that "work across the Isle" bit on HER campaign website]

The only REAL choices are; Cheryl Crist & Deb Wallace.

Deb Wallace is a bit too conservative to be my first choice, but she is probably the most "electable" as some of you have stated, the 3rd is not very progressive.

Cheryl Crist would be AWESOME, but I 'm afraid that she would anger the "Mud Flap" crowd.
