On Elevating Comment Culture

Posted by on Tue, Jan 5, 2010 at 1:27 PM

Karen sent The Stranger an e-mail last night that reads:

Your Slog comments section is so nice. Compared to the vitriolic comments section of most other blogs I read the commenters on the Slog are thoughtful, considerate, and consistently add to the post. You have somehow elevated comment culture. Nice work!

Thanks, Karen. I agree; our commenters have consistently been improving since the end of the 2008 election. Hooray for them!

The Greasemonkey plug-in for Firefox helps too. So long, Fifty-Two-Eighty!

I'm sorry that I have failed to keep the commentary threads in the gutter over the past several months.

My goal has been to assist in making Slog as juvenile and stupid as possible. My failure to hold to that tradition is unacceptable. But fear not! I WILL start to drag us all down into the sewage that we all really want to wallow around in!!

Are you sure Karen's reading Slog comments?

Well, we've had our share of unsightly moments (the Chelsea Alvarez-Bell saga comes to mind), but generally she's right. That said, pit bull youth pastor disgusting fatty religion poisons everything fuck Obama fuck Loveschild fuck Critical Mass and Charles wants to fuck Amanda Knox. You are all terrible cunts, but you are my favorite terrible cunts.

You're slurring, Dan. Drinking on the job again. Sheriously, you are a bad, bad man. I shouldn't read your blog.

It's because we have punching bags here like Loveschild/hartie-pie and sometimes Will in Tukwila. Gets the stress out.

We've ALWAYS been far nicer and smarter than 99.9% of other commenters on most other large, popular websites...have you BEEN on most other websites? People are vicious, stupid, inane or a combination of all of the above.

Chelsea Alvarez-Bell deserved 90% of what she got...actually the virtiol should have been more directed at The Stranger Powers That Be for creating the whole mess in the first place...it was their equivalent of "New Coke".

Clearly Karen missed today's earlier post (and comments section) about Kathy Griffin's F-bomb on CNN. Such highbrow commentary, there...

@14: Blogtown, PDX has had some pretty awesomely acidic threads lately that put Slog to shame.

@14 The Stranger folks (Keck in particular) certainly seemed to go out of their way to fuel the fire on that one. My inner conspiracy theorist thinks it was all a ploy to run Mr. Poe off the blog.

@16 See, and I was gonna suggest the local-ness of Slog that keeps most of us, somewhat civil. We actually sometimes see each other, as opposed to most blog commentors.
Wonder what's in the water down there in PDX. It makes me really happy I don't venture far past Slog. (Though the io9 board tends to be pretty cool.)

That is it. I vow to love you guys a little less in 2010. It won't be easy.

Enigma,

I only drink whiskey when commenting on Blogtown. I try to keep in mind what Menchken said about water. "That fish fuck in it." Don't sip water while blogging, it makes you cranky.

Reverse Polarity 24
We have our fair share of disagreement and swearing here, but it doesn't seem to get completely out of control.

I used to read "Horses Ass" more often. I sometimes like Goldy's writing. However, their comment section is completely insane. Every single comment thread descends into vitriolic name calling and bile within a few posts. Totally unreadable. For whatever reason, Slog never seems to get anywhere near that bad. Thank little baby Jebus.

Ahh, I see. Portlanders need to drown their inferiority to Slog and Seattle to forget they're posting on Blogtown. Makes much more sense now.

@ Enigma,

Yes, yes that's it. Or Portland has more distilleries to obtain said whiskey, and a more extensive light rail system, etc. to ride while enjoying the sacred usige beatha. So, those whose careers prevent them from partaking are forced to consume said water. No Seattle or Slog envy, but whiskey envy is at the root. Just a hypothesis...
