Jury Duty Disincentive

Posted by on Tue, Jan 5, 2010 at 2:19 PM

While on the way to jury duty, this guy used his cell phone to record the following video, where you can hear the gunfire of yesterday's deadly Las Vegas courthouse shootings. The 66-year-old alleged gunman is said to have been upset over losing a lawsuit about his social security benefits. That's a lot of shots. Yay, gun rights!

Vegas is so fucked, I'm surprised there aren't mass shootings every day down there. House values are off by more than half from a couple of years ago, and they're not coming back. No jobs of any kind. Place looks like a ghost town except for the handful of obese mouthbreathers on the strip, waddling along with their giant pink cups.

30 seconds after my parking meter expires, there's a meter-maid there writing a ticket, but gunfire rages through a COURTHOUSE, and there's not a cop in sight.

Seems odd.

Wicks fired his shotgun 5 times. Federal agents fired 81 rounds (from the AP). It doesn't sound like they were interested in taking him alive.

This is a direct result in the failure of our social system. Because of the fact that so many immigrants are abusing the system/benefits/etc. (they actually have it down to a science) so it's tough to catch people for fraud so the irony is when someone that actually deserves the benefits makes one mistake in paperwork or is just honest about their situation, they lose or have their benefits reduced bigtime. And it's hardcore. Meanwhile immigrants continue to scam the system, claim everything they possibly can illegally and work under the table while born and raised Americans are cut from the system for paperwork errors. I've seen this shit first hand everyday year after year and it's getting even worse. The more abuse the more the real needy people get cut for stupid shit. I can only imagine how frustrating it may be for someone like this guy where the gov't actually told his new landlord not to help him out.

I'm with #9. It's an immigrant's fault that this guy shot up the place.

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't most illegal immigrants have payroll taxes, social security, etc. taken from their paychecks if they are working under a fake SSN? I'm assuming they then don't file tax returns or for SS benefits, so wouldn't they actually help the system?

@4 I know, right? A. He doesn't know what is happening, so it's weird that he's so cavalier about it (since gunshots = the possibility that someone is dead and many gunshots = the possibility that many people are dead). B. He doesn't know what is happening (except, hey, gunshots! And they're pretty close!), so why doesn't he at least get behind a car or something?

I'm halfway with 9. I'm not sure immigrants are entirely to blame (citizens abuse the system, too), but the lack of help for people in need of social services could make anyone go crazy and desperate. Maybe if the guy got the kind of help he needed, whatever that is, he wouldn't have gone to the gun cabinet.

@15 OK, sure. He's excused because he was desperate, is that it? Well, I too reserve the right to discharge a firearm at others if I get down on my luck, because if I was getting what I needed, I wouldn't have to shoot people!

Provide evidence or shut the fuck up. Illegal immigrants don't collect Social Security benefits, nimrod. And way to stand up for a career criminal who's previously been convicted of sexual assault and was daft enough to accuse the Social Security Administration of cutting his benefits because he was black. Mistake in paperwork, my ass.

@9,

U.S. Magistrate Judge George Foley reviewed the case and determined Wicks’ payments were reduced because Nevada, unlike California, does not provide a state supplement. When Wicks moved to Nevada he was no longer eligible for the supplement.

Idiot.

I guess the "People who give up freedom in exchange for safety deserve neither" saying only applies for the 1st ammendment, and not the 2nd? Why? Please, someone, explain to me why?
