Sometimes I think I could be a Libertarian. Then I remember I can only whine so much...

@3 - that less popular than the Socialist Party, which also has a member in Congress.

I always giggle at the folks who complain about the post office losing money. They are required to provide universal delivery. For the same amount they deliver letters to New York City, they have to deliver to a small town in South Dakota. If they let private corporations into the mail business, it would cost $10 to deliver a letter to flyover country- red states. Heavy populated states- blue states- would cost a whole lot less. Nobody is going to make a profit having to provide universal delivery.

Very true, @6. Most people forget that their are some insanely isolated spots in this country. Havasu, Arizona pops into my mind straight off the bat; there are also places in Montana, Idaho, and even Colorado that are seriously off the beaten path. And don't forget Alaska and Hawaii too.

As far as the Libertarians are concerned, I might take them seriously if they ever ran someone for office who wasn't a complete kook. That hasn't happened yet, though.

I didn't realize the USPS is or should be a huge priority for any presidential administration.

I have little love for our current political options, but we'll never have a viable third party until Libertarians/Socialists/Truthers/Greeners/Whatever stop shooting directly for Congress and President. You only look like laughing-stocks to the majority of the population (if you get noticed at all).

Try city council before you try mayor. Hell, try for the PTA board first! Show Ron Paul supporters can get a pothole filled or organize a bake sale, not just yell on a street corner with a clipboard. Then show your organization can do this in more than one city, and in more than one state, in every level of government.

THEN try running for the whole enchilada.

The Libertarian Party itself may be a joke, but that hardly makes it any less disappointing that many of the current administration's policies (Iraq/Afghanistan, Patriot Act, fiscal policy, LGBT/Don't Ask Don't Tell, War On Drugs, etc.) are only superficially different than those of the prior administration.

Unfortunately, the joke is on those of us that actually bought into the pre-election hype/promises and so far have got mostly happy talk and window dressing in return.

Doesn't the fact that they ran out of money to distribute for the Cash for Clunkers thing mean it was a success? After all, the idea was to get old, polluting cars off the road and replace them with lower pollution-emitting vehicles.

Also, the big increase in unemployment is due to that giant financial meltdown that was starting before Obama even took office, one might point out. You can't expect the economy to go back to how it was in less than a year.

Also, the USPS is *always* losing money hand over fist. When you have the largest fleet of planes in the world, it's going to hit you in the pocketbook when gas prices go insanely high. Not to mention the problems that #6 pointed out.

And how does the torture in Guantanamo not make a Libertarian list for the Bush disasters? Or the illegal wire-tapping? Or (the implied) federal support of racial profiling?

Libertarianism, a belief in an America that has never existed and never will exist.

What's so bad about libertarianism? I usually like the government not infringing on my civil rights.

(Seriously, a gay friend of mine is republican-turned-libertarian. And he watches Glen Beck. Yes he's closeted. But anyways tell me what's wrong with them.)

What's wrong with them is that they truly believe in their bullshit. A Libertarian will tell you, without irony, that Libertarianism is a belief in Liberty and the Constitution.

It's bullshit. Democrats don't decry that anyone who is not a Democrat obviously disagrees with Democracy. Republicans don't even go as far as to accuse non-Republicans of being against the Republic. Most of us believe in Liberty and the Constitution, and Democracy and the Republic. Many of us have differing opinions on how to express those beliefs.

Libertarians only care about taxes and pot. They will bitch and complain about everything else, especially with a shithead like Ron Paul at their head, but if you got rid of the income tax, all of the libertarians in the world would crawl back into their holes and hibernate until the next time someone says something about raising taxes. They don't give a shit about civil liberties.

And anyone who watches Glenn Beck is worse.

A little late, but the Post Office does not use on dime of taxpayer's money. It is entirely self-sufficient, being 100% funded by revenue from postage, supplies and services.

Libertarianism is a poor excuse for enlightenment. Basically, a greedy fucker who wants to continue being greedy will cite libertarianism to prove how "open minded and free" they are, but in the end it just comes down to money.

The fact is there is a huge rich/poor gap, there is a hole in education. Until everyone has equal access to information, libertarianism will just keep the underprivileged in a state of non-emancipation

"The Libertarian Party stands for free markets and civil liberties."

For free markets: why the left hates them.

For civil liberties: why the right hates them.

Libertarianism is the Fantasy Football League of political philosophies.

They know how it "ought to be done" but they can never put an actual team on the field, much less play an actual game.
