What It Has Been Like Dealing With Greg Nickels’s Office

Posted by on Thu, Dec 31, 2009 at 2:25 PM

This morning I posted Greg Nickels’s recent comment that he voted for Mike McGinn as the next mayor. While there seemed to be zero ambiguity in Nickels’s statement—“I know he earned my vote that way”—I sent a routine email to Nickels spokesman Alex Fryer to confirm. The exchange is puzzling and requires your input:

Hi, Alex. This quote from Nickels says he voted for McGinn—is that right?

"Mayor elect (Mike) McGinn, I think, won the election when he said that he would no longer stand in the way of the deal that the Governor (Christine Gregoire) and I came to over a year ago. I know he earned my vote that way and I hope that he realizes that and was being absolutely sincere. If not, I suspect he is going to have a hell of a fight on his hands."

Alex Fryer replies:

The mayor has never confirmed who he voted for.

Af

Really, then how do you explain the quote: "I know he earned my vote that way..."?

Read into that whatever you want. I'm just telling you what he has told people hundreds of times: he won't say who he voted for.

It seems the only way to read it is that he voted for Mike McGinn. He may have refused to tell people who he voted for hundreds of times before, but this one time—which is all it takes—he seemed to explain who he voted for. Unless there's something missing.

I really can't tell you, man. Read into it what you will.

Well, since it’s open to reading however you will—there are many ways to read it—I'll ask you, the readers of Slog, what you “read into” the mayor’s statement:

I think the better question is: Who gives a crap?

Slow news day?

Holy crap, Eli, that guy is going to shit when he beholds the power of your mighty blog poll.

Go easy on him, will you?

Eh, let him evade, man. Isn't that why there are statements like "Although the Nichols office refuses to confirm who he voted for"?

Media relations douchebags are always interesting. They have to translate complete bullshit into something journalistically consumable.

But, as always, the best course is to completely ignore what they have to say. Who wants to stenograph polished bullshit?

Nickels says he voted for McGinn. You can write that Nickels voted for McGinn until such time as Nickels says he didn't. Who gives a fuck whether his flunky wants to make it official?

gee, Dom-
You should know how it works-
You shill shamelessly for someone in your "reporting" and they return your calls.
You give them your usual biased hitjob hack shitpie treatment and they give you the cold shoulder.

You chose to be McGinns bottom this cycle. It paid off. Don't act like a clueless prick when the rest of the boys respond in kind.

Wait a sec, Dom. You post things and THEN you confirm the facts? This is the opposite of journalism.

this is one time where not voting makes sense.

From the feed headline I was hoping this was some scoop from McGinn's folks about being denied moving into City Hall today by Nickels' office retaliating over the denied january benefits thingy.

But it's so not about that. Waaahmbulance for me.

@ 7) Like most blogs, we post quotes and stories from reputable sources and post them as news--and the quote speaks for itself. But I wanted to give Nickels's office a chance to respond. The response--neither confirming or denying something in plain English--is funny.

Oh, hell this isn't Eli. I saw the poll and just assumed, quite naturally...

the denied benefits story--really okay by me since these folks have had a loooong time to line something else up--is WAY more interesting than what you are focusing on Dom. the fact that now solely due to Nickels staff the city now faces thousands of dollars in OT over the next few days. Thanks Nickels!

He voted for Mike McGinn.

Wish I could check the top and bottom choices for the poll, though.

Years from now, we'll look back on this as the start of Greg Nickels successful career in getting cities, regions, and nations worldwide to deal seriously with global warming issues, fwiw.

another thing to think of - if you were a Nickels staffer, you're probably on your way out, and you're probably not working for McGinn, so you'd be in denial about Greg voting for Mike.

zzzz

on New Years Day - faced with trivia questions - Dom, you expect the BIG time STAR reporter treatment?
Man, ain't no more, no matter what they.

Of all the rags Nickels might stiff, and now get away with it, its yours.

And why should he tell you? If he had endorsed it would be obvious. Now, there is mystery ...

By the way - when does Mc Ginn announce a plan do DO anything? Working on the Big Stall Stall Stall Story?

Dominic,
Did you finish grade school? Nickels said McGinn earned his vote -- but that is not the same as getting his vote.

In other words, what Nickels said is not a 100 percent confirmation.

Score one for Alex Fryer and zero for DH who doesn't understand ambiguity or basic reporting.

@9 ... Nickels vs. McGinn vs. Mallahan was the best time to not vote.
