How Shorewood High Shot the Video

Posted by on Thu, Dec 31, 2009 at 3:50 PM

You may recall that, on a challenge from a neighboring high school, Shorewood High School up in Shoreline recently shot a lip dub to "You Make My Dreams Come True" by Hall & Oates—but they shot it backwards. Like, totally in reverse. With 500 students. It was basically the best video ever. But last week they also released a video that shows the way it was filmed originally, in one shot, played forwards with everyone walking backwards.

Man, these kids rule.

I'm astonished that any of them were able to remember their backtrack lip syncs, weaving blindly in reverse as they were.

[Insert surly, cynical comment about how awful and self-absorbed, American teenagers are today.]

So it really is all ONE tracking shot. I was wondering if it were, while watching the original. Amazing.

20 minutes later and I am still geeking out on how this teenage director and crew managed to film, without any edits, a single mobile and very complex tracking shot while choreographing a cast of 500 complete amateurs who perform myriad maneuvers flawlessly.

Gets better every time I watch it! Happy New Year, Shorewood High!

I graduated from shorewood about 5 years ago... There must have been some serious changes in administration because we would have been tarred and feathered upon mere mention of such a project.

Well, it's no "Russian Ark", but then Sokurov didn't shoot his film backwards. So, give Javier mad props for this - and he better have gotten an "A" in his video production class.

Isn't this exactly how Coldplay did the "Fix You" video?

Javier mentioned that he was inspired by Pharcyde video for "Drop", which was directed by Spike Jonze: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co3qMdkuc…

When I was at Shorewood in the mid 90s, the A/V department was nothing but a broken tape deck. Well done, kids.

I'd rather watch this 25 times in a row than have to sit through 98% of the crap released by Hollywood.

Amazing.

Nothing could ever make me wish I was in high school again, but this comes close.

We really stand no chance against these kids growing up with facebook and youtube and iphones and digital video. They're a bajillion times smarter than us and a gazillion times more creative. I beg you kids not to get rid of social security when you grow up! Take pity on us!

Uh... I only made it through maybe a minute of that video. It was not entertaining at all. Rather lame.

Even trying this as a single take is mind blowing - forget pulling it off.

Absolutely brilliant. And looks like it was so much fun! Just shows the amazing things young people can do with a bit of encouragement. Learning doesn't have to suck.

Also, I sincerely hope that their rival school is giving them big congratulations while secretly scheming brilliant ways to top what they did.

Wow—these are some seriously talented kids! I love that this came out of a public high school rather than an art school. Can't wait to see how their competition responds!
