Man Who Escaped from Prison Is Fucking With the Police on his Facebook Page

Posted by on Wed, Dec 30, 2009 at 8:34 AM

This incredible story appears to be true and still happening and has been happening for awhile:

An escaped British prisoner is taunting police over the internet, using his Facebook page.

Convicted burglar Craig Lynch, 28, has been updating his profile regularly since he escaped from prison in Suffolk three months ago.

He has been mocking authorities for failing to find him and openly musing about moving across the Atlantic. His profile picture shows him making an obscene gesture at the camera.

In a recent update, Craig (Lazie) Lynch says Facebook deleted his original page of over 4,000 fans, but since signing up again, that number has already risen to 3,000.

Lynch was serving a seven year sentence for robbing a home with a weapon.

What can I add to the old internet story? What Zizek has to say about the giving of the middle finger:
...[A] case of thinking with a hand which functions here as an autonomous “organ without body”, a gesture of “Up yours!”, the digitus impudicus (”impudent finger”) mentioned already in Ancient Roman writings.

he now has over 21,000 fans and thousands of comments a day. A lot of people must have a slow week at the office.

"Ancient Roman writings?" Um, no. "The finger" can be traced directly to Agincourt, where the English archers with their longbows wreaked so much death on the French that, when captured, the first thing the French did was to cut off their middle finger (thereby making it impossible to shoot a bow). Holding the intact middle finger skyward became the ultimate "fuck you" statement among the Brits.

This guy must want to go back to jail, he's not exactly the smartest criminal out there. He waited until his 7 year sentence was almost over to escape from prison. He must get off on the publicity.

@2: Dude, seriously? That's the same story that came up with "pluck yew."

Cecil Adams cites Martial and Suetonius as at least two Roman writers who characterize the middle finger as obscene.

It may not be "flipping the bird," but the idea of an insulting digit is way older than the 15th century.

@7: That's very gracious. You're quite welcome.

If you need that funny etymology fix, "pumpernickel" is one of the many that have a juicy but authentic background (http://www.snopes.com/language/stories/p…).

"Devil's fart"!

Hey, "gracious" is my middle name. That's what you get when you're dealing with old farts. Today's kids don't seem to know the meaning of the word.

Thanks for the pumpernickel link too. I get a kick out of things like that.

This dude escaped from a minimum security prison, which you can essentially just walk out of. Why is he so badass?

Good Morning Charles,
I read about this in this morning's paper. I don't know who's worse the fugitive or his fans. But, it isn't all that unusual. After all, plenty of notorious criminals had their fans (Jesse James, John Dillinger, yes even Ted Bundy). A weird phenomenon but Facebook only accentuates it.

@10, the brow furrow. That's what makes him badder than than the baddest badass who ever badassed.

It's guys like this that make cops accidentally kick suspects in the kidneys and drop them down flights of stairs. Can't say I blame them.

When the cops catch him again (and I hope they do very soon) they should keep his facebook profile updated with pictures of him crying.

He's a fucking criminal. A waste of life. Facebook fans? Christ... I hate people.
