Iran: The Land of Revolutions

Here you will find a photostream of the revolution that erupted in Iran 30 years ago:

In the Eighteenth Brumaire, Marx famously states that history repeats itself "first as tragedy, then as farce." This is true in the case of the two Iraq wars. But with the two Iranian revolutions, none are farces. From The Economist's print edition:
NO ONE knows whether the Iranian regime’s latest bout of violent repression marks an ill-judged step towards its own much-merited demise or if it will cow the dissenters into sullen but long-lasting acquiescence. But the violence marks a change in the nature of the struggle that has been fought out since last June’s tainted presidential election. The regime may catch its breath before it embarks on another round of shooting and clubbing. But the prospect that it is losing its grip, perhaps even terminally, has now become a lot more credible.
One and two are tragedies.

Charles,
All wars are tragedies. One only deduces whether they are necessary or not. As for revolutions, some are good (the American Revolution of 1776) and others bad (the Iranian of 1979). What's tragic of this current revolution in Iran is that the reactionaries are still in power. We'll see how history plays out.
