Terrorist Attempt on a Northwest Airlines Flight

Posted by on Sat, Dec 26, 2009 at 1:29 AM

New York Times:

A Nigerian man tried to ignite an explosive device aboard a trans-Atlantic Northwest Airlines flight as the plane prepared to land in Detroit on Friday, in an incident the United States believes was “an attempted act of terrorism,” according to a White House official who declined to be identified.

The device, described by officials as a mixture of powder and liquid, failed to fully detonate. Passengers on the plane described a series of pops that sounded like firecrackers...

Mr. Abdulmutallab told law enforcement authorities, the official said, that he had had explosive powder taped to his leg and that he had mixed it with chemicals held in a syringe.

Washington Post:

Abdulmutallab has told federal investigators that he had ties to al-Qaeda and traveled to Yemen to collect the incendiary device and instructions on how to use it, according to a federal counterterrorism official briefed on the case...

Michigan native Melinda Dennis, who was sitting in across the aisle from Abdulmutallab, told the Free Press that he "was burned very severely on his leg" but remained "very calm and didn't show any reaction to pain."

wow another negative connotation to Nigerians. But what I'm interested in knowing is who was the guy who jumped this guy on the airplane. He deserves a medal of honor.

So much for powder and syringes on airplanes. Sorry, diabetics and hot chocolate lovers!

That's because the passengers who subdued him weren't doing it right.

Nigerians are the bane of Africa. Most Africans know to stay far away from these people. They're like the trailer-trash of the continent.

@7 In that case, everyone should either wear flamboyantly inappropriate underwear, or none at all. Tough times demand humorous revenge..

I demand that the OIC (Organization of Islamic Countries) hold an emergency meeting to express their outrage and determine how that are going to punish Nigeria (the country he is from, and also a OIC member) in the same way they did to express outrage and determine how that were going to "punish" Denmark when a small paper there published a cartoon of a guy with a turban and bomb on his head.
I would also like to remind people that the U.N, under pressure from the OIC, recently passed a resolution banning the "insulting religion"- if this resolution binding ,as they want it to be, it would mean we would be limited in our freedom of pointing out this guy was a Muslim.
I would also add that the OIC has condemned terrorism.... and what do they claim is the most serious terrorism present in the world today? Islamaphobia. No, I'm not kidding either.

I love how security "beefs up" after such incidents rather than to be vigilant *before* this crap happens.

It's not as if security isn't a PITA now. They'll figure out how to make it more difficult for anyone trying to fly anywhere.

Don't be surprised if the next time you fly they ask you to take off all your clothing and not just your shoes.

Obama needs to control his illegitimate son better.

Wouldn't want him turning into a Billy Carter...

@ 8,

I was thinking clear plastic clothing and baggage. Rain proof for PacNW weather, yet a breeze to get through airport security.

God only knows how many millions of people have had to take their shoes off in airports thanks to one nut-job. I don't even want to think about what idiotic measures they'll come up with as a result of this incident. (And if I have to take my Goddamned pants off, I'm not wearing anything underneath. Fuck 'em.)

What is it about the West that these folks from 3rd world shit holes hate so much? Are they simply jealous to the point where their heads blow off? Same behavior we get in our ghettos at home. Maybe the success of Anglo-Saxons is so galling it makes these people convinced we are responsible for their shit hole-ness?

I really thought Mudede would be posting on this. He's always ready to extrapolate individual actions into those that represent the country/race/continent the individual is from.

They're poor and desperate for anything that gets them out of their shit holes. That's why they take up with religious nut bags because they're the only ones offering them some sort of comfort and direction. The west is nothing more than a convenient fat-assed target to aim them at.

Interesting theory. How do you explain this Nigerian terrorist then, o wise master? He lived in a posh London neighborhood, was a former University College London student & his father was the chairman of a bank.

...Er, wait, how does that work though because all Africans are supposed to be poor & living in shitholes. I'm confused. Hm. Or maybe it's just that you're a complete dumbass with a totally ignorant, childlike view of the world. George W. Bush - are you posting on Slog again?? Fess up.

Currently, the US is occupying and/or bombing Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen.

But that explanation is reeeeaaaaaaally uncomfortable to people like you.

Here: He's jealous, poor, a freedom-hater, an Islamic fundamentalist, a savage.

Whew. What a relief.

What's in the fridge?

I don't care who he is or from where he came. He is a terrorist, a suicide bomber. He was able to board that plane with a bomb in his underwear and detonated it. Had he had a little more more explosive on him and the detonater not malfunctioned, his mission would have been a success. That is the issue here. He is on a caution list, he checks no luggage and he pays cash for his ticket. Those are major red flags yet no one noticed. That really scares the hell out of me. The system is a failure, a dismal failure. I do not want to hear how the system worked after the fact. That guy got on that plane without detection. That means the system failed. The malfunction saved those lives not the crew and passengers. After that, the guy was not a threat. Th crew just got a fire extinguisher and put the fire out. Had that bomb detonated, no one on that plane would have even known what hit them. Right now they would be investigating the cause of the explosion.
I don't care to explore what motivated this guy to become a radical muslim would be suicide bomber. I just know that he is one, and he and others like him want to kill us and themselves. We have identified the threat now we need to remove no matter what it takes.
If any of you found out that a den rattle snakes were living under you porch and getting in your house would you sit and contemplate why they were so venemous when other snakes were harmless and not do anything until one of them actually bit you or your family. No I think you would accept that they were dangerous pit vipers and take action to get rid of them and prevent them from harming you in the future. It's just that simple.

I think it's sad but some other comments are inconsiderate I'm sorry. I feel bad for the injured that were on this flight and had to deal with this.which this situation seems like a 9-11relapse.

It is Sad

This is really serious matter for Nigeria. Nigeria economy is emerging and businesses from other countries are taking interest in the products of Nigeria, such things can also disturb number of flights to Nigeria.
