Model Fight

Posted by on Wed, Dec 23, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Street Carnage has some photos from next month's V Magazine, in which a model-sized model and a "plus size model" (a size 12) face off in the same outfits*. Both women are five foot nine and have long brown hair. I'll let you decide for yourself how the models do, but the plus size model definitely wins this photo, no contest:

* Although, as one of the comments on the post points out, both models have been Photoshopped.

The end of the article says that "midwestern fatsos" skew the average when we all know it is the south-east that is the fattest. Also the fittest city in America is in Texas so I don't think you can draw that many conclusions through geography.

All magazine layouts are photoshopped. I'd venture to say that about 99% off all images we see each day are photoshopped. So, it seems pretty pointless to say, "OMG photoshop." See recently: demi moore's missing hip chunk. At least this is a tastefully retouched layout. I doubt they slimmed anybody down for this one.

Is this actually two different models, or the same model grossly reduced in the first picture? The faces are indistinguishable.

Crystal Renn (the model on the right) is a size 12, still under the average American woman's dress size, and hot as hell. Model on the left (Jaqueline something or other) is just there, while Renn owns the photo. She also has a book out about her career as a straight-size versus plus-size model, and it's been noted that she's had much more success as a plus-size model in generally straight-size arenas (Euro Vogue, runways) than she ever did as another generic emaciated girl.

Her new spread in Canadian Elle:

The fact that size 12 constitutes "Plus-sized" when the average woman's dress size is closer to 14 is ridiculous.

Isn't it amazing how American women have trouble maintaining "unrealistic" body weights that women in most other countries maintain easily?

I think we're kind of missing the point here. It's not about who's hotter, as that would be body shaming, but that other sizes work in fashionable clothes and the proof of this is in the pudding.

I read a lot of fashion blogs and become a little numb to the same coat hanger body over and over because I'm looking at the construction of the clothes only, like they are art, but a lot is lost using their bodies in that way which is particularly obvious on sites that sell fashionable clothes or high end erotica also using fashion models. It's not looking at clothes as art at that point, it's projecting yourself and your concept of beauty on that model's body, and when you look at their body ribs and protruding collar bones over and over and over, it almost becomes hideous. One body shape doesn't fit every circumstance.

Recently a friend of mine who is crazy curvy bought a wedding dress and she is a GODDESS in it. This was made for her body, but the model was a skinny tall girl and it hung off her. Why? Because that is the standard. Put clothes on a variety of bodies!

Just to continue to put these images in their proper bullshit perspective, I'm about the same shape as the "bigger" gal (5'8/140#) and I fluctuate between a size 4 and 6 (in couture, designer AND off-the-rack labels), so what does that tell you? Saying this woman is a 12, at least a U.S. 12, is a LIE.

Numbers, weight, photographs, PhotoShop: It's all bullshit. Unless you make a living on your looks, you are as beautiful as you are inside, period. Sticks and stones might be cast, but they ultimately have no effect on the individual beauty of a person.

Since the skeleton on most people is pretty much the same, the closer you are to bone-skinny the easier it is for a designer to fashion something for the catwalk and have it fit most models. They want the design out there first, then they can worry about making it fit on other people.

Plus-sized models, sad to say it, are often thrown up there to get attention for the show, but most designers like Lagerfeld and sometimes McQueen are averse to having to make and remake something beyond a size 0 or 1 when there's legions of girls sized just-right already ready to put them on and strut.

And besides, if all your models are the same stick-thin look, you don't really have to worry about someone stealing the show unless you want the attention.

That isn't to say that there's not a burgeoning field of plus-sized models and fashion lines (especially for men, now, with larger male lines taking the stage at the big fashion week, and even one bear-specific one), but since those lines and shows take up 4 or 5 pages of the 200 page fashion season magazines, it's just not going to work as a major part of the fashion industry.

Your role model shouldn't be a glorified walking coat hanger who is uninterested in inspiring the larger public.

This is why I hate fashion, it's so technical.

I highly doubt there are a lot of guys out there who would define the size 12 or the size 14 models you see after the jump as unattractive, or overweight. They look just fine. The problem is that most women who are a size 12 or 14 don't look like that, nor do most size 8's for that matter.

Pretty is pretty, ugly is ugly. There is actually a good deal of science behind what is generally considered attractive. Things like symmetry, smoothness, hip to shoulder ratios, etc. These things are really consistent from culture to culture, and there is a wide latitude or range, meaning that the skinny model and the 'plus size' model are both attractive. Give either of them bad skin, or a malformed nose, and they would be much less-so, not only to an American audience, but to people just about anywhere in the world.

Also interesting, female beauty standards are almost universally set by women, and male 'tastes' follow that lead.

And yes, both men and women in most western countries (to exclude any argument about food availability in non-western countries) are considerably thinner than in the US. I have actually gained about 40 pounds since moving back to the US 10 years ago. Some of that is age, and I'd like to believe a little of it is muscle, but a lot of it has to do with the lifestyle.

Um, you can put any girl that isn't fat into heels like that and she's gonna trigger the same response in just about any man's head. That said, the chubbier one, if you saw her in real life, wouldn't look nearly as good as the skinny girl. Photography is deceptive, and you can sultry up just about any woman with makeup and good lighting.

I'd bet all the money in the bank, if you put these two in a bar, %99 of the eyes would be fixated on the skinny one, and the %1 would be accounted for by the guy who's too drunk to focus correctly. That eye would be focused two inches to her left.

Ideal bodies are exactly that -- ideal. Stop complaining about setting an 'unreal' expectation, since %99 of men don't give a damn. Sure, we'd look over your shoulder and check her out, wish you were a little skinnier and had legs like that, but that has almost no effect on our overall opinions of you 'normal' girls. Hell, when you're not standing next to a girl that hot, we practically forget girls like that even exist... So don't hang out with extra-hot girls and you're fine.

That said, healthy is healthy, and we're good at spotting that. If you have 20 extra pounds or so, it's not our fault you need to lose weight. Go for a jog, or get out more.

You guys forget, women are like wine, it's how they age that's important. Most 18 yr olds look good in a swim suit, it's how they look at 30 or 40 that matters. Fact is most white womyn in Seattle blow their gaskets after one kid and look like something the cat dragged in by 35. They stop dressing nicely and simply let themselves go to hell. Seattle is fill with trollish middle aged white womyn.

If Woody Allen and Sandra Bernhard had a child, it couldn't be uglier than those clothes.

40/mitten: "Unless you make a living on your looks, you are as beautiful as you are inside, period."

You can FEEL beautiful because of what you're like inside, and others may think you have a great heart, but that doesn't mean they're going to find you physically beautiful and want to kiss you or fuck you.

A person's appearance matters to people. And, contrary to how many women like to portray it, men don't have a patent on caring about looks. The way a man looks is very important to women.

Asian 1981, why do you keep repeating yourself? You've made the same post at least 4 times!

And as for the statement "Do yourselves a favor guys, marry an Asian girl. No cottage cheese ass," I beg to differ. I live in Japan; I am the only white woman in a town of about 10,000 people and let me tell you, when I go to the public baths I see PLENTY of cottage cheese ass. Stop stereotyping Asian women as these magical stick figures that never age. They're just as human as anyone else, and ridiculous statements like "Marry an Asian woman and you'll be happy the rest of your life, "
make you look like a racist fool. Asian women all get old, some of them get fat, and even the ones who don't get fat sometimes do shit like decide they never want to have sex ever again. Asian does not equal skinny and certainly does not equal marital bliss.

We all need intensive therapy.

If you are fat (flab, jiggling, gut) then you're fat.
If you're curvaceous (tight thunder thighs, defined waist and broad shoulders) then you've curvaceous.
If you're slender (slender) then you're slender.
If you're emaciated (fatigued face, sallow complexion) then you're emaciated.
If you're athletic (toned) then you're athletic.
If you're petite (tiny, perhaps very thin but no jutting clavicle) then you're petite.

Just own it and be it. If you're unhappy with it then do what you can to fix it. If you're fat don't call yourself curvy because you're not, fatty, you're fat, you're rotund. If you want to be curvy then work out until you're curvy. If you're curvy and you want to be slender then workout and watch your food intake until you're slender. If you're athletic and want to be fat then drink all the milkshakes and eat all the pizza you want until you reach your goal.

Whatever you are and whatever you want to be, be it. Quit hiding behind the language of 'average' (because anyone who is smart and takes a look around in this country KNOWS that our 'average' is due to unhealthy consumption, c'mon) and 'curvy' if you're fat. Do you know why you get so defensive? because you're insecure, because you don't feel good about yourself. If you want to be fat then be fat but realize that you're an acquired taste.

I say this as a girl who has struggled with weight her entire life and who has dealt with both ends of the spectrum. I've felt insecure on both ends of the spectrum; for feeling like a fat freak to feeling like walking TandA when I was skinny. The only thing you can do is be happy with yourself. At the end of the day there will always be some dude/lady who will let you sit on his/her dick/face.

And sorry, J-birds have much better bodies than 95% of white girls. I've been in J-land too and had my fair share there; great bodies, well into their 40s. Most white girls lose it by 30. Walk around Seattle and take a look; seriously fugly women here.

None of the models are smizing (sp?) so both me and Tyra do not approve. Also, as stated, the clothes are not that great, the models are photoshopped, etc.

Generally, the poses are pretty generic, I see better posing after a couple episodes of top model. So.... yay feminism?

It's worth pointing out that the photo selection in the V shoot is very skewed towards Crystal standing out. Jacquelyn Jablonski can work it just as hard as Crystal is, it's just the editors picked shots where she is less expressive.
As for everyone crying photoshop, you do *not* want to see what unretouched hi-res shots look like. While photoshop is often used to liquefy girls to be thinner, or change the shape of lips and noses, its main purpose is actually just to cover up the horror that hi-tech cameras and printers reveal. Skin imperfections and flyaway hairs are more obvious and distracting in stills than they would be if you were staring at the models right in the face in real life, and I say this as someone who is on a photoshoot at least once a fortnight. Photoshop is 100% needed so that magazines aren't full of errant hairfluff, distracting up-nose boogers and drunk party bruises.
When they say size 12, I'm pretty sure they mean UK and Australian size 12, which is about a US six. A sample size model is generally around a UK 6-8 so a + sizer is 2-3 sizes bigger than that, makes sense.
Also, I may get shot down for this but I have to agree with @37. Crystal's exact proportions may not be achievable for every woman, but her size certainly should be.
The styling in this shoot is totally hot (although bobby socks on a size 12 under 5'10 isn't the best idea), to those crying ugly, I say, you're boring.

I don't provide snorkels, but should somebody show up with one, I'm cool wit dat. GGG and all.

A muff-diving snorkel isn't a terrible idea, actually. Like, a nose-snorkel. I've gone down on (skinny) girls where the angle that they seem to prefer makes it tough to breathe. Definitely an idea worth developing. If you decide to go with it, drop me a line. I'll let you eat me out with your prototypes. Give you some constructive feedback.
