Karate Kid Remake: Now With 100% Fish-Out-of-Wateriness!

Posted by on Wed, Dec 23, 2009 at 4:19 PM

Did you know they were remaking The Karate Kid? Only, instead of Ralph Macchio, (or Hillary Swank), it stars Will Smith's kid. And they got Jackie Chan for the Pat Morita part. And they moved the whole movie to Beijing.

It certainly looks remake-y.

Slowly ruining my childhood one crappy remake at a time.

It would have been great if they had simply remade it with all the original actors...though of course, with Noriyuki "Pat" Morita having passed on, it likely wouldn't have worked as well...actually, I'd like to see more remakes like that, with the original actors twenty years older,

Kids will love it. Which begs the question, why is it still called the Karate Kid? The franchise doesn't mean anything to kids, and Wu Shu Kid has a decent enough ring to it. -1,000 points for actually running on the Great Wall.

It's weird to want to talk shit on a child, but Will Smith's kid seems absolutely insufferable. Plus, his mom is in a band called Wicked Wisdom, which needs to be atoned for before this legacy continues.

Wait, no I agree about Will Smith's kid.. he has ruined so many films already, and he's still just a kid! Imagine the havoc he'll have wreaked by the time he reaches adulthood. He's a horrible child actor and would get NO jobs if his dad wasn't Will Smith.

Oh, dear. I switched to another screen while it was playing, and here's what I heard at the one-minute mark.

Jackie: "Take off your jacket...take it down...put it up...take it off."

Kid (protesting): "I already did-"

Jackie (emphatically): "Jack. Et. Off."

[Rrhythmic slapping sounds.]

Ralph Macchio is now old enough to play Mr. Miyagi's part. They should have kept some of the original cast.

Odd that they're setting it in Beijing, when karate is a Japanese martial art.

@10: I was kind of thinking the same thing, but that it should have been set in Copenhagen, where a young Obama takes on the Chinese bullies and uses his mighty powers to kick some developing country ass... but alas, no, it was not meant to be. Maybe in part two, with an awful Peter Cetera soundtrack?

should've called it 'kung fu kid" or "wu shu kid/midget". but this looks good IMO. I could see more black kids wanting to learn martial arts like taekwondo and kung fu after this movie comes out though.

The fact that Jackie Chan's in this will make me go see it.

The Will Smith re-recording of "Your the Best Around" with dope new lyrics that plays over the climax will be the nail in my coffin.

Isn't Will Smith's kid like five? I think the part was designed for a pre-teen/teen not someone in kindergarten.

They should do a month of old Jackie Chan films in Seattle - he used to do mind blowing shit.

The film actually was called Kung Fu kids and was not a remake. The studio decided to slap Karate Kid on it instead. So, the film isn't really a remake (or a reboot), but just a sly marketing ploy. Though obviously the film has Karate Kid style elements - but that's nothing new.
