Rob McKenna Goes After the Senate Health Bill

Posted by on Tue, Dec 22, 2009 at 2:38 PM

Remember that deal that got Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson to back the health care reform bill? Well, the attorney general of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, is now looking into a legal challenge against it and he's reportedly getting help in that effort from his counterpart here in Washington State:

As part of the compromise, Medicaid will be expanded to cover uninsured Americans. The cost of the expansion will be paid for by both federal and state money, except in Nebraska where the federal government will foot the entire bill forever.

The deal will save Nebraska an estimated $45 million over the first decade alone, courtesy of taxpayers in the other 49 states...

McMaster said Attys. Gen. Rob McKenna of Washington and Mike Cox of Michigan had agreed to join him in investigating the constitutionality of the deal and “exploring the options that may be available to South Carolina and other states to defend taxpayers should this provision ultimately become law.”

Update: A statement from McKenna:

The arrangement that requires Washington state taxpayers, and those around the country, to permanently pay Nebraska’s additional Medicaid costs carries a price tag of untold millions. It raises key constitutional questions about whether residents of certain states should receive special privileges, based on the deal-making skills of their senators. I look forward to working with Attorney General Henry McMaster and other colleagues in researching the constitutionality of such a provision.

Just get rid of the provision in reconcilliation. It only needs 50 votes now.

$45 million dollars is NOTHING when it comes to health care spending. If Nelson was able to arm-twist the Fed gov to pay health care expenses for his state, then good for them, I don't give a shit. Rob McKenna, otoh, can bite me. Can we get a Dem challenger to that asshole soon?

The "deal" is nothing more than a bribe.
A cash payment for a vote.

If Microsoft or Boeing paid $300 million to get a Senator's vote someone would go to jail.

But Harry Reid can do it, with YOUR money, and no one peeps, least of all Obama.

Hypocrite.

Liar.

Change you can Shit on....

I hope the entire health care bill is challenged by the court system. According to the Nurses Union which came out against the bill today, a family of four making $54,000 will be required by law to carry PRIVATE insurance that will cost upwards of 17% of their income or approximately $9000.00

Fuck that.

@2: It still will need 60. Reconciliation is a budgetary process, conference committees are something different.

Bills generally carry a provision that says if one part of the bill is invalidated, it doesn't impact the constitutionality of the whole. Therefore, the provision will be impacted, Nelson will have the cover he needs to be reelected, and the rest of us will have a marked improvement in health care on which to build toward the health care system that we really want.

The family of four won't be REQUIRED to pay 17% of their $54K income to insurance companies. It's the other way around. If they make LESS than $54K will they will get help in paying premiums. $9,000/yr is about $760/month, and at today's premium prices, that's not unusual at all for a family of four.

Cold War Veterans

Are you a cold war veteran? Were you among the men and women who worked to keep our planes aloft, ships at sea, foreign bases manned, our eyes and intelligence focused on the enemy? Our strong defense and counter offensive capability did not come easily, but it was effective. When the United Soviet Socialist Republic was disbanded we believed that we had won, but apparently the cold war is not over.

Yesterday, Christmas Eve 2009, our Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell voted to further the infestation of communism in this country, the same communism that we worked so hard to defeat. Once again we must take up or defensive and counter offensive positions. This time we must meet them at the ballot box. But we can’t do it alone. We need the vote of every citizen you can muster. Start today collecting a pledge from everybody you know the he or she will join you in voting against all who support the path to communism that this congress has set us on. Collect those pledges and just before election time, send a reminder to those persons.

Long live America. In God we trust. In government we do not.
