Mexico City Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Posted by on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 2:20 PM

LA Times:

Mexico City lawmakers today made the city the first in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage, a change that will give homosexual couples more rights, including allowing them to adopt children. The bill passed the capital's local assembly 39-20 to the cheers of supporters who yelled: "Yes, we could! Yes, we could!"

Spain and Mexico, two incredibly religious nations with strong ties to the Holy See...

There's going to be same-sex weddings at the Basilica, too.

Like dominoes...

@3: Nah, Colonialism. Spain has gay marriage, therefore this is their fault.

Forgetting that the Aztecs were big ole homos along with the Maya, Mixtecs and Toltecs. The Olmecs beheaded homos.

My big head would be sitting out in front of some mexican national museum if I were alive back in Olmec times.

So, a developing country is more progressive than the fucking "Change" party of Barack Obama. This news makes me even more disgusted than ever at the Democratic Party. If you are lgbt and defend the Democratic Party, you're as insane as the Tea Baggers. Stop supporting homophobes and start supporting equality.

@12,

No, a single city in a developing country is progressive. How long ago do you think San Francisco would've legalized same sex marriage if it were up to individual cities? Get real.

Yes, remember Mexico City is a federal district, it's sort of it's own "state", similar to how Washington D.C. is it's own district but it doesn't belong to any state.... Yeah if San Francisco wasn't part of California and were it's own state, gay marriage would be legal there still... of course that's true with a lot of cities..

"For example, divorce laws changed to "no fault," and now there are many more divorces. Unless you're a divorce lawyer, looking back, I doubt many would argue that a nearly 50% divorce rate was a positive change."

Ouch, see now I realize that we just come from vastly different points of view, which I guess I should have surmised before. I find it highly unfortunate that half the people marry the wrong person, but I truly don't think it's a bad thing that bad or unloving marriages are able to end without the (figurative) bloodshed required in states that don't allow no-fault divorce. In fact, (and I know I've said this on this board before), I think that divorce is one of the best thing to ever happen to women. Obviously, I'm not talking about most individual divorces, but the fact that women are able to get out of an abusive or unfaithful marriage is, in my estimation, a very good thing. Men have essentially always been legally allowed to get a divorce if they were unhappy in their marriage. Women were not.

I realize it's not going quite as far as same-sex marriage, but Mexico City isn't the only place south of Texas to make big recognition of same-sex rights.

Ecuador enshrined same-sex unions (everything but adoption) in its 2008 constitution. Yeah, they've had 20 constitutions since 1820 or so, but...

Hell, most of Catholic South America is more progressive on this one issue that the US. See e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_ma…
