I got this email from the veteran environmental artist—sort of like a Christmas card, I guess—over the weekend. The subject line was "shoveling to keep snow, orono maine."

Senior engineering students are requested to hand shovel snow at the college of engineering plaza. This collective effort provides a passage for undergraduates, serves as a civic effort to save maintenance costs, protects the campus environment from salt and abrasive sand and suggests a mental and physical college credit. Stay off the machines, keep shoveling, peace on earth.

i don't get it (or maybe i do). when jay leno mentions a state, a few people always shout out a whoop. since you guys are a bit the equivalent in high meets low blogship, it's hard to believe noone on the sloggy has roots in Maine. i've been to Kennenbunkport once, nice town despite being the respite for that evil presidential dynasty who put pimp Bernanke in charge of the country's money. btw, cool shovel!

My entire youth ,from the time I could walk, was shoveling snow or mowing lawns. I can honestly attest it has no moral value what so ever.

@1, I think the Strangler has TWO Mainers on staff.

@4, not for any values of "easier" that I would recognize. We're not talking about a quarter-inch dusting here; we're talking blocked doors. And the main reason you shovel your walks is not for your ease but the ease of others. Unless you think standing over some poor granny with a freshly broken hip and shouting "wearing snowshoes would be easier" is cool.

"protects the campus environment from salt and abrasive sand"

I expected "reduces the college's carbon footprint by lowering need for plowing"

Which would make sense: sand and salt don't work on a foot of powder-- gotta move the snow somewhere first.

@6: yes. that's exactly what i think. and i would yell that at a grandmother. and i never ever ever shovel my walks. or my elderly neighbor's walks. or my out of town neighbors walks.

Shovel up, whiners. Hate CO2 emissions? Put on your gloves and get crackin'. Same thing in the fall with leaf blowers, get a rake and a broom.

Shame on that school's grounds crew if they do use salt & sand after the snow is removed. Urea is much better ice melt, and does not poison the ground like salt. In fact, it is a bit of a nutrient. Your entry rugs/mats may smell a bit of cat pee, but it rinses out easily and doesn't destroy the material.

@ #9

I feel likewise about Buster, he always has a beatific countenance, even when flummoxed. I want to thank him again for the opportunity to draw huge flowers on the sidewalk for the Dalai Lama's visit a while back. Thank you Buster.
