The Dutch About to Discover a Cure for Obesity

Posted by on Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 9:20 AM

This will happen in the future: You are eating this....

...but your mind thinks you are eating this:

Science Daily reports:

A real possibility does exist for developing a new generation of foods that make people feel full by releasing anti-hunger aromas during chewing, scientists in the Netherlands are reporting after a review of research on that topic. Such foods would fight the global epidemic of obesity with aromas that quench hunger and prevent people from overeating. Their article appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry...

...Molecules that make up a food's aroma apparently do so by activating areas of the brain that signal fullness.

Their analysis found that aroma release during chewing does contribute to the feeling of fullness and possibly to consumers' decisions to stop eating.

Soon, the planet will have nothing but beautiful people to look at.

Remember, beauty is skin deep but ugly goes to the bone. So ugly, even skinny ugly, will stay with us until natural selection, or artificial selection, breeds it out.

Actually you can eat the burger just don't eat anything else that day, and make sure you are living an active lifestyle and not sitting on your ass all the time.

No fancy schmancy brain tricking smells needed.

That burger looks gross.

I'd better not be eating the carrot. I'm allergic to carrots.

@4 Agreed. I like a good burger, but that does not look appetizing. It looks like something that would cause you to spend the rest of the day sitting on a toilet.

@2,
The funny thing is, with plastic surgery and other "ugly-removing-products" so readily available, it's probably much LESS likely that ugly will be bred out by natural selection.

By disguising themselves as beauties, the uglies might be able to reproduce more than they normally would have. Their offspring, of course, won't have all that anti-ugly technology built in and will be born hideous.

And then the cycle will repeat!

True, Urgutha. I laughed when I read that the top-selling cosmetic surgery in Iran is nose-jobs. Their kids are still gonna have great honkin' schnozzes.

I'm sorry, but the more science messes with my food, the sicker, fatter and more bloated I get. I only got control of my weight by going back to basics, no processed foods, no additives, and ironically lots more flavor and filling feeling. Hmm. . . .

Since #2 got me thinking about natural selection...

You could argue that this will hinder natural selection, if anything. Yes, some people have physical or particularly serious mental issues contributing to their overeating. But, for the majority I think it's just weak-will and/or apathy.

Not being mean, but merely being realistic (I have a >300lb husband who I adore) ...people who are obese as a result of overeating (or eating nothing but junk) literally do it to themselves. It's hard to sympathize with that.

The health problems, from everything I've read, outweigh any advantages. I'd definitely argue that it is, from a natural selection standpoint, a clear weakness. And, being able to make people feel fuller seems kind of like cheating. If you can't eat well, you should have to deal with the consequences.

This research/concept is still cool, though.

I wonder if fatter people tend to have blander diets. That certainly tracks with the food served in middle America.

Don't worry, @5, in the future they'll be able to make burgers that taste just like carrots too.

@13 - interesting point. I wonder if any research has looked in to that.

Do you think that technology will be used to help people lose weight or buy more food?

I think, perhaps, it might be the latter: http://www.rense.com/general7/whyy.htm

Fuck you Charles. Most of the ugly people I know are skinny.

If you are huge and you do eat shitty food to great excess then you have probably been overriding the 'full' feeling for some time. You eat til your sick. I've seen it, it's punishment and its' insatiable.

What does that even mean? Middle America is eating different food than the rest of us? C'mon.

@8 That's the point. By perpetuating a look that's selected against socially, but removed surgically before it can be bred out of the gene pool, they ensure that the next generation also comes to them for a nose job. .

@21: I totally agree, Geni. I've got no fucking idea what's in that second pic, but I know I don't want it. Gimme the Goddam carrot!
