Mayor-Elect McGinn on Mayor-Elect McGinn

Posted by on Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 6:12 PM

This was the best question put to McGinn on "The Conversation" today:

About our upcoming mayor's personal grooming. I don't know how to approach that tactfully but this city absolutely cannot have a mayor who is as slovenly looking. We don't want him to go around this country or anyplace else dressed and groomed the way he is. He must have a clean-shaven face and properly cut hair. Thank you. Goodbye.

I guess it's not really a question. It's a declaration. But my quick transcript doesn't do the call justice. Listen here. The call—and McGinn's politic response—comes at the 35:20 mark.

Hells to the no. If Mike "Daddy Bear" McGinn shaves his beard I will retract my vote for him.

Well, the guy probably could use a trip to the Men's Wearhouse. Sounds like someone's been watching too much Mad Men, though.

He could dress a bit slicker, but Seattle has a long tradition of bearded mayors.

My guess is that the beard hides a scar from a knife-fight or a poorly-thought-out tattoo. Would McGinn shave it off if enough of us donated to pay down at least 50% of the city's deficit?

I had no idea our mayor was Daniel Pinkwater...

I don't know why you guys have to be so mean to Joe Mallahan.

His grooming isn't that bad ...

Has the caller actually SEEN our current lame duck mayor?!

The beard is hot! Mayor Daddybear needs to keep it.

Glad to see KUOW's screener was putting through the really important calls.

@ 8: I prefer Mayor Papabear, but thats just semantics; because his beard is always gonna get him 5 woofs up, so yes, he needs to keep it.

Keep the beard please. I think we are long past the days when those who like the "clean cut" and no facial hair look can call the shots. We elected a candidate with a beard and I hope he keeps it. No he must not be clean shaven. The caller should go back to the 1950s or get used to life in the 21st century.

@9, I remember listening to this. It wasn't even the call screener. It was a recorded message from a lady that had called in earlier. She sounded like she was about 80. It's a generational thing.

But his response was a bit too polite. The correct answer is: "No. I had this beard and these clothes when over half the voters elected me. Live with it."

She'll probably die before he's up for reelection anyway.

I agree with the keep the beard crowd! Your mayor elect is so much better looking than our mayor here in Denver.

Besides, beards have a long and honorable history among the leadership in this country.

It's high time to overthrow the dictatorship of the razor blade!

I'm just glad he shaves clean 'down under'.

Here's a question for Mayor McGinn: What is he going to do about the city's growing population of sour old harpies more concerned with personal appearance than matters of actual significance to city governance?

McGinn's website says the tunnel is "unnecessary".

Yet, 4 vendors have already been chosen.

What? Who? Where?

Go ahead...have some legal marijuana.

It'll make logic go away.

Honestly, I think McGinn looks A-OK. Hair, beard, clothes -- no freakin' problem. I reject the notion that every public official working in downtown Seattle must wear a suit and gel his hair and be 100% clean-shaven everyday. As long as he's a good mayor, I really don't think it matters what he looks like.

I remember a much leaner Mike from the wayback machine. Trust me, his beard hides a multitude not of sins but of chins.

McGinn's problem is not his beard. People who think it is need to recuse themselves from the debate on the grounds of being idiots.

I don't give a chit what he looks like as long as he can do the job right.

It's not just a beard, though. It's an unkempt slovenly mess of a beard. It looks like it's got food in it.

@21: This from the guy who thinks putting a cheap suit jacket over a stained button down from Value Village is dressing up?

The word you are looking for to describe your mayor is "rugged."

She even sounds like an idiot.

People used to say this about Abraham Lincoln, and how'd that work out?
