Urban fires in the United States.

The Great Fire of Portland, Maine occurred on July 4, 1866 — the first Independence Day after the end of the American Civil War. Only two people died in the fire, but 1,800 buildings were burned to the ground making almost 10,000 people homeless. Soon after the fire, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow described his old home town: "Desolation! Desolation! Desolation! It reminds me of Pompeii, the 'sepult city'."

The Civil War is generally considered over with Lee's surrender in April of '65, right? There may have been some scattered fighting afterwards, but there couldn't have been much by July 4 of that year.

@2, obviously you don't have many friends who are Southerners. The "War of Northern Agression" (as they call it) continued after the surrender; it wasn't enough for Grant to win, he continued to kick them after they were down. This shit isn't in the "Northern" accounts, but it did happen.
