Temporary Road Closure

Posted by on Thu, Dec 17, 2009 at 2:02 PM

It's sign of progress—this stretch of Denny has to be ripped up so the new Capitol Hill light rail station can be dug out and built—but still, it's quite a sign:

They also have part of Burke Gilman by UW closed off for a few weeks right now for work on the station there.

You know I would love it if we could vote on a package to speed this damn thing up. I wonder how much it would cost to get all the promised stations in Seattle open in a couple years including the one at Rainier and I-90?

If its not astronomical it should be part of McGinn's attempt to go to Ballard and West Seattle. Hell the line from Bellevue to Seattle could just be extended west.

That post is what the Go Fug Yourself gals would call a scroll down. Everything's fine, great, cool...er, WHAT?

Why does shit take so long to build these days? Didn't we build the Empire State Building in a weekend?

@7, I'm pretty sure they didn't build the Empire State Building UNDERNEATH miles and miles of busy city, with all the power, gas, water, sewer, telephone, cable, and who knows what else (steam?), not to mention an ocean of mud.

They're probably also making at least some effort not to kill or maim any of the workers on it. When they built the Empire State, they didn't give a shit; plenty more Irishmen and Indians where they came from.

Wikipedia says 410 days, five killed.

I'm guessing you couldn't speed construction up much no matter how much you spent. Tunnels are complicated.

Sorry. I haven't been back in years. A few things have obviously changed.

Wow, that's even a longer term than the sign that went up at Beacon and Lander in 2004... the one that said the street would be closed until Dec. 2008. (Of course, there were delays, and it didn't reopen until mid-2009.) Four years sounded like an eternity.

God bless Broadway for taking this hit for the team for the next six years. Folks, do what you can to patronize what struggling businesses remain (RIP Bailey/Coy, Siam on Broadway, Jade Pagoda, Septieme, etc., etc.).

How is the streetcar going to loop around from 11th to Broadway at the end of the line with the street closed? The streetcar is planned to open in 2012 or 2013...

Also, that woman is ADORABLE!

They should really ditch the sign and write out the message with the lasers from the temporary art installation. That would be ravetastic.
