Never Mind

Posted by on Thu, Dec 17, 2009 at 9:35 AM

In this week's Last Days, I write about a rape that occurred in a First Hill parking garage.

Picture_3.jpg

Turns out it didn't happen. From KIRO:

A woman said she was raped in a parking garage near Seattle University on Dec. 11, but Seattle police said it’s a false report. Police were called to the parking garage in the 600 block of Broadway Avenue in Seattle where the woman said the incident happened between 5:30 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. Detectives said they believe the victim suffers from medical issues and she was not raped. They will not be pursuing any charges. After the report, Seattle University sent out a campus public safety alert to all of its students and staff.

Cheers for the non-existent rape, jeers for "medical issues" that make people file false police reports.

What a jerk! I work across the street at Swedish hospital and all of my co-workers were freaked out about going to and from their cars after this.

Cheers to SPD for not filing charges.

Those medical issues could easily include schizophrenia, bipolar disorders or other mental illnesses. It's great that SPD has realized that this is a false report, but jeering at the mentally ill is not cool.

Fucking up normal people's lives with your craziness is not cool either. If a crazy person yells "fire" in a crowded theatre, and 4 people are trampled to death as a result, are we to just wink at it like it was a new puppy shitting on the floor?

Living in society comes with responsibilities. The false report should result in standard penalties or forced in-patient treatment.

@5 - exactly. We have reality shows for that, and cable.

And never mind how this fucks over overarching myths on negative perceptions for spacing safety inside cities. This kind of reporting feeds on that unfounded fear like it's Thanksgiving Day.

4: If you read what I wrote, you'll notice my jeer was for mental illness, not the mentally ill person. Can't we all agree it would be better if this women weren't inflicted with the medical issues that inspired her to file a false report of rape?

Definitely agree with the forced treatment part. This woman should receive similar treatment as someone who's violently mentally ill. She may not be violent, but the effect's the same -- screwing over/scaring innocent people.

If people can be found not guilty of murder because they are mentally ill, surely this poor woman can be given some slack. She didn't profit from it. No one was arrested and jailed as the perpetrator. Wow - hospital worker and college kids spent more time walking in pairs and being more aware of their surrounding. THE HORROR!

Screwing over and scaring innocent people? May society be as gracious to you when all your balls aren't inside the triangle. Where is the compassion for people less fortunate? It's is no fun being scared. But it is far less painful than being mentally ill. People struggling with mental illness are not on vacation in shangrila. Their lives are hell being produced inside their own heads. Do you think this woman enjoyed thinking she had been raped? I'm sure that the psychological terror was no less horrible for her than if it had truly happened.

My God - have we vanished so far into our own worlds; cut off from one another by computers, the internet, ipods, and cell phones that we have forgotten what it is to be human?

hey stella, fuck you. my wife is a prof at seattle u. she already has to deal with the fact that someone was assaulted in the fucking women's bathroom in the building where she works (FOR REAL). this report certainly did not help her feel secure.

but, hey, let's cut this cunt some slack, eh? because she has medical issues, ok? yeah, those issues must be what made her blame a black man for the "rape". fuck her and fuck you.

taint -

wow. lot of anger towards a woman asking for compassion for people with problems. i'm sorry your wife is scared. a big "fuck you" to me isn't going to make that go away. the "(FOR REAL)" reason your wife doesn't feel safe had nothing to do with this woman. if the FOR REAL criminal who assaulted someone in the bathroom of the building your wife works in has not been caught, your energy might be better spent staying on top of law enforcement to solve that crime and get the FOR REAL criminal off the street.

perhaps the FOR REAL crime so frightened this poor "cunt", as you so compassionately called her, who must have already been somewhat compromised by her medical issues, was the catalyst that manifested itself into a delusion that she too had been attacked. i think in some way all women feel threatened and attacked when we hear the news that one of our sex has been violated.

in a nation where the default boogeyman is always a black man, it is no wonder that a black man was manifested as her assailant. i'm far less angry at a woman who is mentally ill than i am at those who coolly and calmly conjer up a black assailant to hide their own misdeeds. the long and distinguished list of these women is a matter of public record.

a civil and more compassionate dialogue about this situation is all i advocated. i was neither advocating or condoning the false reporting of crimes. i see that you, too, are incapable of that. but if it makes you and your frightened wife feel better to direct your anger and obscenities at me, then i'm glad. small price to pay in the ongoing debate about us all being more compassionate and decent towards one another.
