The $9,000 Toothpick

Posted by on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 11:07 AM

In my ongoing, extremely spotty coverage of literary artifacts that seem incongruous with their owners' books and sold for ridiculous amounts of money:

Charles Dickens's toothpick went for $9,150 at auction, sold by the heirs of the Barnes & Noble fortune. It was engraved, retractable, and made of gold and ivory. (What Little Nell or poor Smike wouldn't have given for a gold toothpick... )

Brendan,
That reminds me of something. When I first moved to Seattle in 93', I went into a record shop on the Ave. (University Way). I saw under the glass counter Eddie Vedder's (dental) retainer for sale! I laughed and thought "Man, ANYTHING is for sale". I wonder how much it fetched?

Toothpick art is fairly incredible. just saw on the pre-Good Morning Americunt news this AM some Waterbury, CT. It was a castle out of popsicle sticks. Took a year and a half to bulid!! Must say it's time to get back to my hobbies, wasted my life on this sad arts blog of yours. Keep rollin!
