Reading Tonight: A Foodie, a Steampunk Author, and Poetry Flying Everywhere

Thomas Kellar is at University Book Store at noon. Kellar, who is apparently a "foodie of note," according to the press release, reads from Ad Hoc at Home: Family-Style Recipes.

Tonight, the West Seattle branch of the Library hosts a very special edition of Thrilling Tales. A librarian will read you the story "Christmas is a Sad Season for the Poor" by John Cheever and "A Visit to the Bank" by Shirley Jackson.

Elliott Bay Book Company hosts "A Celebration of IMAGE Journal." Bearing the Mystery: Twenty Years of IMAGE is an anthology of work that has been published in the local magazine. Lots of authors will be in attendance. And at Town Hall, Mary Gordon reads. Gordon believes that her book Roots of Empathy: Changing the World Child by Child will save the world from bullyhood.

Two really great-looking readings close out the night. Cherie Priest reads up at Third Place Books tonight. There's a Stranger Suggests coming up about that in a minute or two, but let me just say that Boneshaker is a really fun, exciting sci-fi novel. I recommend it. And then, at Bulldog News in the U District, Floating Bridge Press authors will read from the latest issue of Floating Bridge magazine, with a very special appearance from the late, lamented Subtext Collective. There will be poetry flying left and right at Bulldog News tonight, and much of it will be very, very good.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.

Cherie Priest is the Steampunk author.

I read Boneshaker. I keep wanting to like steampunk; the premise is wonderful. But a lot of steampunk is really terrible. Boneshaker continues that trend. There is a lot to like about it, but I could not suspend my disbelief enough to accept taking zombies seriously.

Thanks, RP.

A friend was doing up steampunk Christmas ornaments, so I was going to mention it to him.

Calling Thomas Keller a "foodie of note" does him a bit of a disservice. He's widely considered to be one of the greatest chefs working today.
