I Already Love This Movie

Posted by on Tue, Dec 8, 2009 at 3:33 PM

This got announced over the weekend, but I just wanted to make sure that everyone got a whiff of its brilliance: Paul Thomas Anderson announced his followup film to There Will Be Blood. It is reportedly going to be called The Master and it will star Philip Seymour Hoffman. I'm already in. But what's it about?

In the film, Hoffman plays a charismatic leader — nicknamed "The Master" — who launches a controversial and increasingly popular "faith-based organization" in America, circa 1952.

The Master forges a bond with Freddie, a young drifter that becomes a lieutenant in the Master's organization. After becoming ingrained in the belief system, however, Freddie begins to have second thoughts about the organization and the Master that's taken him under his wing.

I would like to say that I am already giving a P.T. Anderson movie starring Philip Seymour Hoffman about L. Ron Hubbard and the birth of Scientology nine billion stars out of four.

Sounds like "There Will Be Blood" -- two competing male characters.

I'm convinced I'm going to be sued (and sued in England) for even commenting here that I can't wait for this movie.

But hey, the South Park guys are still alive!

I have said for some time that the unauthorized biography of L. Ron Hubbard (available on anti-scientology website clambake.org) would make a fantastic movie but no one would dare make it due to the lawsuits and possible terrorism it would unleash. The closer he hews here to the reality that is way stranger than fiction the more fabulous this will likely be.

The book by Douglas Rushkopf "Ecstasy Club" is about Scientology/L Ron in the same way "Last Days" was about a Cobain. Good read on rave/guru/4th wall culture.
Please, False Gods, i implore you - no more Philip S Hoffman movies for at least 2 years.

Coincidentally, James Cameron is working on his own version of Scientology . . . to be called "Thetanic."

What a shame that Anderson couldn't find anyone more interesting than P.S. Hoffman for the role. I'm yawning just typing his name. Going from Daniel Day-Lewis to P.S. Hoffman. Talk about going from sublime to ridiculous.
