The Senate's Stupak Amendment

Posted by on Mon, Dec 7, 2009 at 1:20 PM

It was filed today by Democratic Senator Ben Nelson and, like the Stupak Amendment in the House, this amendment seeks to tie the success of the overall health insurance reform bill to an agreement on tightening restrictions on federal funding for abortions.

Debate on the Nelson's amendment is likely to begin tomorrow, and he's threatening to filibuster the whole reform bill if his abortion restrictions aren't added.

While we wait to see what happens, it's worth remembering what Washington Senator Maria Cantwell told me on Nov. 23: she won't vote for the reform bill if the restrictions are added.

Once again the democrats can't find any brains to call out this issue what it is, political grandstanding. Even though a vast majority of Americans want universal healthcare, the endless stupid loop of arguing about abortion gives them the perfect opportunity to continue wagging the dog until the next round of elections is complete. The populace clings to *hope* TM and the insurance company's get what they want.

We - as a nation - can't afford this amendment.

Literally.

Pregnancy is very very expensive.

And the untold millions of young women and teens that will die in backroom abortions are even more expensive.

Well, we all knew this was coming, so I'm not exactly surprised. It's still pretty depressing, though.

@3 - Do those of us who care about health reform and women's rights a favor and do not ever ever use the "pregnancy is expensive" argument ever again. What the fuck.

it's not the ones that die that are expensive- it's the ones who are hurt but survive and run up a lot of medical bills

I think that the Democrats should say: "Fine, we'll take publicly funded abortion off the table, and in exchange, we want prenatal care, labor and delivery covered across the board, as well as health care costs for new mothers and infants, and full care for low-income children. Oh, and some kind of daycare subsidy for low-income parents."

@5 - no prob, we'll just impose an estate tax on rich people to pay for it, right?

yeah, right ... like you actually want to pay for what you get ...

@8,
If the repubs were reasonable, that would be worth a shot, but the whole thing isn't about the repubs getting this abortion thing in there. They just want the dems to fail no matter what. They're still bitchy and sore about losing the election and they're simply going to piss all over every proposal the dems put out.

Fuck, the dems could introduce a bill to cut all taxes and spending by half and increase the military budget by the same amount and the repubs would probably bitch about that too.

If the repubs were reasonable, we wouldn't be IN two wars of convenience and massive worldwide recessionary unemployment right now.

And if unicorns existed, they'd puke glitter rainbows.

Nice - so if a woman finds out she will need dialysis for the rest of her life if she gives birth to a almost dead baby - no abortion, unless she can come up with thousands of dollars to end a pregnancy that's gone terribly wrong. Currently there are millions of women covered but C-Street Stupak and his brethern from "The Family" don't want that. No health exception. Not even for close to death. I wonder if they will demand a mandate for insurance companies to cover dialysis or the costs of going blind for life. Only if it's for the fetus. Fuck the woman.
